Parentage of the grape: Unknown

History of the grape: Marsanne is native to the northern Rhone valley in France. There, it was the traditional blending partner of Roussanne, but has slowly been taking over because of its greater reliability. It is becoming the primary variety in appellations such as St-Joseph, St-Peray, and Crozes-Hermitage. The role of Roussanne had been to bring acidity to the blend, since Marsanne can be flabby, but when grown in the right place, picked at the right time, and not overcropped, Marsanne can produce balanced wines. This variety also produces excellent wines in Switzerland and in nearby Savoie, where it is known as Grosse Roussette. Marsanne is used in blends throughout the Languedoc, but is not one of the varieties Read more »

Marsanne on Snooth

  • Twisted Tree Vineyards White Rhone Blend Marsanne Roussanne 2009

    Snoothrank:

This Lake Osoyoos white has a nose of stewed fruit such as apricots, peaches, mango and guava together in a kind of harmonic presence. Upon entry, there is the slightly oily viscosity lovers of these grapes (especially Roussanne) know well; there is more stone fruit and that mystifying yet enticing orange Pekoe tea on the palate. This wine is ... Read More

  • Help!  I'm having a BBQ/wedding reception towards the end of this month and have hit a huge snag!  My wine shop just informed me that the wine we wanted (Chateau Bonnet 2008 Entres deux Mers) is completely sold out and they don't know when they'll be getting more in!  I'm kind of freaking out because we have about three weeks until the party... ... • Domaine St. Prefert Chateauneuf du Pape White 2006

    Snoothrank:

Nice silky nose of delicate citrus and some floral hints. A tad bit of red grapefruit. On the palate, dried pineapple, white peach, honeysuckle and a hint of almond. It's a tad steely up front, but rounds out nicely.- Tasted at Marché Bacchus 5/29/10 Read More

  • OK, tasted my first Viognier and was sort of miffed, a bit confused and finally I think I like it.I've been testing my taster and found out that I believe it is one step short of Excellent. I tasted minerals, pineapple and a citrus flavor.  The flavors were long lasting and I've become semi-hooked on a white wine, I would purchase another.  Any ... Read More

    Snoothrank:

A light wine which still manages to drip with the taste of honey and pineapple. Even so, this outstanding effort is not to sweet and nicely balanced with just the right acidic addition. For those who like a white Rhone-style wine this is a very good one. 93. Read More
