Parentage of the grape: Unknown

History of the grape: Marsanne is native to the northern Rhone valley in France. There, it was the traditional blending partner of Roussanne, but has slowly been taking over because of its greater reliability. It is becoming the primary variety in appellations such as St-Joseph, St-Peray, and Crozes-Hermitage. The role of Roussanne had been to bring acidity to the blend, since Marsanne can be flabby, but when grown in the right place, picked at the right time, and not overcropped, Marsanne can produce balanced wines. This variety also produces excellent wines in Switzerland and in nearby Savoie, where it is known as Grosse Roussette. Marsanne is used in blends throughout the Languedoc, but is not one of the varieties Read more »

Marsanne on Snooth

  • D'Arenberg the Noble Mud Pie Viognier-Pinot Gris-Marsanne White Blend Adelaide 2008

    Snoothrank:

Stunning. A dessert in itself. On the nose it's sweet stewed apple and rhubarb with big fat sultanas and then in the mouth it develops into sugary apricots and the finish is burnt toffee that lasts for a minute. And only £11 in Oddbins. So so happy! Read More

  • Treana Proprietary White United States California Central Coast Red 2007

    Snoothrank:

Nose of honeysuckle, light frame. Very spicy overtones and dried apricot with citrus peel flavors. Has an interesting "zing", but a bit too spicy overall on the finish for me to be really enjoyable. Generally alright.- Tasted at Marché Bacchus 12/12/09 Read More

  • Kitchak 'Vivace' Ermitage Blanc 2005

    Snoothrank:

Extraordinary and very different White Wine. These guys are doing some very ... the internet. This one is Marsanne, Roussanne with a little Chardonnay. Interesting spicy white wine with lots of depth. Cinnamon and Nutmeg notes. Bottle says it is in the barrel for 15 months, I though it would be over oaked, but it clearly is not. It should la... • Torbreck White Blend Eden Valley Viognier/Marsanne/Roussanne 2008

    Snoothrank:

Some spiciness and herbal qualities with stone fruit that comes out behind it, and very mild acidity. Seems a bit unbalanced and too short, but I am intrigued by the aroma. Read More

  • Preston Vineyards Madame Preston 2007

    Snoothrank:

We had this the other night at a restaurant. Usually it's a struggle to finish a bottle, just the wife and me, in one sitting. Not this time. We had to walk it off before we went home, but it was worth the extra hour of babysitting time. A little floral, a little creamy, a little minerality, a little peach, a little lemon, a little unctuous f... Read More

Tahbilk 2004 MARSANNE Opened 29/10/09Hard to knock this wine, I have been drinking this wine since it was $6.99 a bottle now its a little more, but it never fails to please. If you happen to stumble over an older one, buy it and be ready to be impressed: Nose: Honeyed hints of old wood, opening to a clean nose. No sign of spoilage. Colour: Mol... Read More
