Parentage of the grape: Unknown

History of the grape: Marsanne is native to the northern Rhone valley in France. There, it was the traditional blending partner of Roussanne, but has slowly been taking over because of its greater reliability. It is becoming the primary variety in appellations such as St-Joseph, St-Peray, and Crozes-Hermitage. The role of Roussanne had been to bring acidity to the blend, since Marsanne can be flabby, but when grown in the right place, picked at the right time, and not overcropped, Marsanne can produce balanced wines. This variety also produces excellent wines in Switzerland and in nearby Savoie, where it is known as Grosse Roussette. Marsanne is used in blends throughout the Languedoc, but is not one of the varieties Read more »

  • Founded only in 1994, Torbreck has quickly emerged as one of Australia’s ... ... for the white varietals Marsanne, Roussane, and Viognier. Shiraz was, of course, also included in the new plantings.  It is here, adjacent to these vines that David planted, that the brand new Torbreck Winery has been built. • Domaine Jaume Cotes du Rhone les Collines Blanc 2008

    Snoothrank:

Really unbelievable value from the southern Rhone, with ripe quince fruit, bitter honey and concentrated spice. Even better with pork tenderloin and gremolata. Would have looked for a case if I thought about it a second longer. Read More

  • I had an incredible meal of a red curried braised lamb shank with Brussels sprouts and root vegetables recently. I've been searching for the perfect red to pair with something like that. The meal had the salt and heat you'd expect in Thai cooking, but the heft and umami calling out for a nice red. Any thoughts? Read More

  • Borra White Blend Lodi Fusion 2007

    Snoothrank:

This white rhone has a very floral/pineapple nose... mostly viognier... but ... but blended with roussanne, marsanne.. I found it very floral and fruity on the nose, taste as well, but also having a deep balance... almost a mineral, anise finish.. reminds me of the finish of a russian river chard (though not chard- in any way). Pretty good ... Read More

    Snoothrank:

very good fruit and length, and despite the glycerine mouthfeel there is zero residual sugar in there; of course it has alcohol - because of the ripe grapes. and speaking as a european: I wish I could buy Rhône whites of barrel 27´s quality at this price. so an extra glass for value Read More

  • I am just starting to explore French reds. The few Cotes du Rhones that I have tried all seem to be more appealing the second day after having been opened. Maybe I need to try some older vintages that have had a chance to age? So far, most of these examples have been from 2007 and they seem to be overly tart (tannic?).I just tried a Bordeaux fo...
