Malbec

Name of varietal: Malbec

Common synonyms: Côt, Auxerrois, Pressac, Vesparo, Malbeck

Parentage of the grape: indigenous to France

History of the grape: Some believe Malbec is named after a Hungarian peasant who spread plantings along the French countryside (Janos Malbec-seed, perhaps?). But modern day oenologist Pierre Galet suggests that it was originally called “Côt” and Malbec may perhaps be a name given to it when it was grown in Burgundy. Regardless, the varietal was once one of the most popular grapes grown in France. However, it is very sensitive to frost and coulure (breaking apart), and after a particularly harsh winter in 1956, plantings of Malbec in France are now mostly limited to Southwest France, particularly in Cahors, and to the Medoc in Bordeaux, where it is a blending grape.

Malbec has become the star red attraction in Argentina, where it is often produced in a lush, fruity style. Some parts of the country were resistant Read more »

  • Norton Perdriel Single Vineyard 2003

    Snoothrank:

In a word, sexy. This mature, smooth wine draws you in with its nose of ... ... ... skill. The fruit of the malbec is mated with the sensuality of the merlot, while the cabernet sauvignon carries the lugggage to round out a fabulous blend that is great for sipping but is even better paired with a seared steak. There is absolutely no way you'l... Read More

  • Carmelo Patti Red Blend Gran Assemblage 2002

    Snoothrank:

Even decanted and with asado steak I watched being cooked in Mendoza, this one gets docked because I compared it to the 2003. Carmelo Patti definitely shows his love with this remarkably complex blend. Markedly complex and gratifying, it remains quite unlike any other similar blends that I've enjoyed. Have with game or otherwise [char]grilled re... Read More

  • Pine Ridge Onyx 2005

    Snoothrank:

Interesting wine. A lot more earthiness and funk than the cabs from Pine Ridge. Deep colour and aromas led me to believe this would be a heavier wine but it was softer and had mild tannins. It might need to age a bit. Read More

  • Donati Family Vineyard Red Bordeaux Blend Paicines Claret 2005

    Snoothrank:

The winemaker's notes are right on target. It contains everything but the ... ... Syrah, 4% Cabernet Franc, 3% Malbec, and 2% Petite Verdot. There's something in this wine for everybody to like. What's interesting is that the DNA of each of the varietals can be easily detected. There are blue and purple fruit notes from the Merlot along wi... Read More
