Malbec

Name of varietal: Malbec

Common synonyms: Côt, Auxerrois, Pressac, Vesparo, Malbeck

Parentage of the grape: indigenous to France

History of the grape: Some believe Malbec is named after a Hungarian peasant who spread plantings along the French countryside (Janos Malbec-seed, perhaps?). But modern day oenologist Pierre Galet suggests that it was originally called “Côt” and Malbec may perhaps be a name given to it when it was grown in Burgundy. Regardless, the varietal was once one of the most popular grapes grown in France. However, it is very sensitive to frost and coulure (breaking apart), and after a particularly harsh winter in 1956, plantings of Malbec in France are now mostly limited to Southwest France, particularly in Cahors, and to the Medoc in Bordeaux, where it is a blending grape.

Malbec has become the star red attraction in Argentina, where it is often produced in a lush, fruity style. Some parts of the country were resistant Read more »

  • Maipe Malbec 2008

    Snoothrank:

Beautiful purple bleeding out to a red rim in the glass the wine visually shouts "body" and it does have it. Here we get a wonderful blend of blackberries, plums, "gaminess" and hints of spice greeting the noise while it delivers black fruits, pepper, smooth tannins and a fine acidity slowly tapering off into a lovely finish. • Château de Haute-Serre Malbec Blend Cahors 2002

    Snoothrank:

There's a lot of age on the nose. Good acids in the mouth and nice fruits (plums and bitter cherries), its a touch tart on the finish, and has a really leathery component. Not bad for the price. Read More

Nicely aged but still full of loud spicy sweet sweet fruit. A little powdery like a lot of French wines I like. Overall a killer bottle. Read More

    Snoothrank:

When the option presents itself, I always try to go green. When at Trader Joe's, I happened upon this biodynamically produced wine at a relatively low cost. And although I loved the concept of indulging in an affordable eco-friendly beverage, at first I hated the wine. Upon opening and letting breathe for ~30 min.: couldn't even finish the f...
