Malbec

Name of varietal: Malbec

Common synonyms: Côt, Auxerrois, Pressac, Vesparo, Malbeck

Parentage of the grape: indigenous to France

History of the grape: Some believe Malbec is named after a Hungarian peasant who spread plantings along the French countryside (Janos Malbec-seed, perhaps?). But modern day oenologist Pierre Galet suggests that it was originally called “Côt” and Malbec may perhaps be a name given to it when it was grown in Burgundy. Regardless, the varietal was once one of the most popular grapes grown in France. However, it is very sensitive to frost and coulure (breaking apart), and after a particularly harsh winter in 1956, plantings of Malbec in France are now mostly limited to Southwest France, particularly in Cahors, and to the Medoc in Bordeaux, where it is a blending grape.

Malbec has become the star red attraction in Argentina, where it is often produced in a lush, fruity style. Some parts of the country were resistant Read more »

  • Trapiche Iscay Merlot Malbec 2005

    Snoothrank:

Although this wine I drank the most during my stay in Argentina, it´s not the ... I´ve tried. It´s a good malbec for it´s price. Supple, fruity (quite a lot of plums), vanilla (of course) and half-long lasting in the mouth. Goes very well with Lamb from the grill ("Cordero a la Cruz"). Wouldn´t drink it with stronger cheese Read More

  • Tempus Alba Malbec Blend Pleno 2003

    Snoothrank:

This is the extremly well-bodied, long-lasting and medal winning 60% Malbec/40% Cabernet generic top wine of the Tempus Alba estate. 13 months in new french oak - which you notice a lot - and 14,1%. Hints of pepper and red berries, combined with the expected vanilla, makes this one of my favorites so far (quality/price perfect). If you don´t lik... Read More

  • Antucura Malbec Blend 2003

    Snoothrank:

Purple color with red ruby around the rim. On the nose this wine is packed with Ripe strawberry, Rose Petal, Clove and vanilla with just a bit of forest floor funk that keeps it interesting. Flavors of black currant and cherries sing from the glass and with time turns to intense dark chocolate. Seems to be a bit of residual sugar. This is a ... Read More
