Malbec

Name of varietal: Malbec

Common synonyms: Côt, Auxerrois, Pressac, Vesparo, Malbeck

Parentage of the grape: indigenous to France

History of the grape: Some believe Malbec is named after a Hungarian peasant who spread plantings along the French countryside (Janos Malbec-seed, perhaps?). But modern day oenologist Pierre Galet suggests that it was originally called “Côt” and Malbec may perhaps be a name given to it when it was grown in Burgundy. Regardless, the varietal was once one of the most popular grapes grown in France. However, it is very sensitive to frost and coulure (breaking apart), and after a particularly harsh winter in 1956, plantings of Malbec in France are now mostly limited to Southwest France, particularly in Cahors, and to the Medoc in Bordeaux, where it is a blending grape.

Malbec has become the star red attraction in Argentina, where it is often produced in a lush, fruity style. Some parts of the country were resistant Read more »

  • Absolutely -- I've been enjoying a Domaine Bousquet Malbec from Mendoza, Argentina recently. It's fantastic and very affordable. Has dark fruity overtones with an oak cask kick to it. Very nice, would recommend.  Read More

  • I ve tried the Nebbiolo of Cuna de Tierra, which is excellent. Its 60% Nebbiolo, 20% Malbec, 20% Tempranillo. Its a bold red wine, but it seemed less rustic and more refined then most mexican Baja wines. Cuna de Tierra is located in Guanajuato, central Mexico. There are new wineries opening all over Central Mexico... Queretaro, Aguascalientes, G... Read More

  • Reininger Malbec 2014

    Snoothrank:

The wine is a deep, inky black at the center, with garnet along the edges. The ... and very dry finish. This Malbec struck me as being very Cabernet like, which is probably why I like Reininger's interpretation!See the full review on my blog here: http://allaloneonaplanetfullofpeople.blogspot.com/2017/02/2014-reininger-walla-walla-malbec.ht Read More

  • Matias Riccitelli Hey Malbec! Mendoza 2015

    Snoothrank:

Pinched red fruit aromas with a pleasant herbal dried basil and black pepper note coming through. Concentrated mixed berry, cherry and crushed flower petal notes on the palate with dark chocolate mousse and a hint of espresso on the finish, turning floral again before trailing off towards an earthy spice. Carmen 2011 Merlot Gran Reserva, Maipo Alta $4.99 pre-sale price, bought during the 20% sale at Grocery Outlet. This is a very nice Merlot for the price paid. Im generally not a Merlot fan, but Ive got no issues with this one, except that its not a big blockbuster and its not going to be an ager, as it has no tannins to speak of. A very smooth, e...
