Malbec

Name of varietal: Malbec

Common synonyms: Côt, Auxerrois, Pressac, Vesparo, Malbeck

Parentage of the grape: indigenous to France

History of the grape: Some believe Malbec is named after a Hungarian peasant who spread plantings along the French countryside (Janos Malbec-seed, perhaps?). • The Gaucho Club 2011

    Snoothrank:

This Malbec pours a beautifully aged tawny color with the end of the fresh purple and raspberry juice hues lingering around the rim. Clarity is nice as well.....The aromas are most definitely oak rich, meaty and full of charred Earth. With some oxygen however, things round out and the subtle spice of the Malbec grape shines through, along with... Read More

  • Osoyoos Larose le Grand Vin 2009

    Snoothrank:

The Osoyoos Larose just keeps improving, and the 2009 edition is as good as any of the predecessors with a cedar bark - sweet cherry nose with a hint of black earth and pencil lead. Unbelievable mouth-filling flavours of cherry, cake spice and bramble berries with a hint of vanilla on the finish. As a Bordeaux should be, but often isn't. Sup... Read More

  • Tannat's better in France, but then I think that about Cahors vs. Argentina for Malbec, too. Though even in France it's not always easy to find good ones. Has been some demand for the last decade or two since its health benefits have been touted, but it's basically just grown south of Bordeaux towards Spain and its limited market hasn't forced c...
