Parentage of the grape: None available.

History of the grape: Macabeo is Spain’s most widely planted grape. From there, it has made its way to southern France’s Roussillon region, which is located just over the Pyrenees mountains. Though a text from 1854 suggests that it originated in the Middle East, its history is rather murky.

The variety must make up at least 51% of white Rioja, where it is prized for its ability to resist oxidation and to provide the acidity that Malvasia and Garnacha Blanca lack. However, it is being slowly edged out by international varieties such as Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc Read more »

Dry / Crispy by Freixenet in Spain very clean refreshing,--as one who searches high and low for inexpensive, good tasting Bruts I enjoy this one regularly. Buying a few bottles a week won't break the bank, and I enjoy Brut champagnes as a less filling, lighter alternative to beer, as well as a less-regretful morning after effect to red wine. Read More

  • The nice thing about Sauvignon Blanc is that it is much less expensive than ... ... although never as green. The best value I've ever found in a sparkling wine to date!! I can't believe the complexity I experience in this wine given its low price point. Pale yellow with just a hint of green. Clean, fresh, and fruity but with unexpected depth coming from yeasty/bread-like notes and something more cutting yet savoury (like graphite or nut skins). Very dr... Read More
