Macabeo

Common synonyms: Maccabeo, Macabeu, Viura (as well as, but less commonly, Alcañol, Alcañón, Blanca de Daroca, Charas Blanc, Forcalla, Gredelín, Lardot, Listan Andaludschii, Listan Andaluzskii, Lloza, Macaban, Macabeo, Macabeu, Maccabeo, Maccabeou, Maccabeu, Makkobeo, Malvoisie, Provensal, Queue de Renard, Rossan, Subirat, Tokay, Ugni Blanc, Viuna, Xarello)

Parentage of the grape: None available.

History of the grape: Macabeo is Spain’s most widely planted grape. From there, it has made its way to southern France’s Roussillon region, which is located just over the Pyrenees mountains. Though a text from 1854 suggests that it originated in the Middle East, its history is rather murky.

The variety must make up at least 51% of white Rioja, where it is prized for its ability to resist oxidation and to provide the acidity that Malvasia and Garnacha Blanca lack. However, it is being slowly edged out by international varieties such as Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc Read more »

  • Bodegas Paniza Viura 2013

    Snoothrank:

Gassy with slightly green herb framed warm apricot fruit on the nose. Moderately rich on entry with good acid, supporting a little apricot and mostly green apple fruit with green plum on finish, good length, and a hint of rs covering the acid on the lemony finale. Fruity and straightforward with a hint of mineral spice. 85pts Read More

  • Beso de Vino Macabeo 2013

    Snoothrank:

Yellow and green fruit with a bit of dusty chalkiness and hints of wild herbs on the nose. Bright fruit, juicy acids, bit of astringency, bit of sweetness late on the palate, decent finish, grapefruit, kiwi, white grapefruit pith and just a suggestion of steel on modest finish. 85pts Read More

  • Beronia Viura Rioja Blanco 2012

    Snoothrank:

Very tight on the nose with a hint of green melon and some lovely dried herb and almond shell top notes. Smooth and integrated in the mouth, this delivers a nice array of fresh lemon, slightly peachy and melon flavors on the palate but does lack a bit of complexity. A hint in creaminess and some faint nutty shadings add some detail to the backen... Read More

  • Cvne Rioja Monopole Blanco 2012

    Snoothrank:

Rather floral in the glass but with a restrained, earthy quality to the perfume which also picks up hints of grapefruit and a suggestion of green herb. Juicy up front, this gains a bit of flesh and roundness in the mouth where flavors of bruised peach and pear add nuance to the core of grapefruit pith and under-ripe pineapple fruit. A bit of almo... • The nice thing about Sauvignon Blanc is that it is much less expensive than ... ... although never as green. Macabeo is produced in several regions and if you can find some, look for some Vinho Verde from Portugal. It often has a bit of a fizzy quality, it's dirt cheap, and it's fine for hot humid summers. Moving over to the Basque region, you... Read More
