Lambrusco

Name of varietal: Lambrusco

Common synonyms: Salamino (refers to the bunch form)

Parentage of the grape: indigenous to Emilia-Romagna, Italy

History of the grape: There is evidence that the ancient Romans were drinking wines made from Lambrusco, a grape that was strewn about the hillsides like dandelions (its translation is “wild vines”). In Italy, for many centuries, the wine has been produced in various forms from dry to sweet, but usually some level of sparkling from frizzante to full on bubbles. It is made most often in the Charmat method, which means the secondary fermentation takes place in pressurized tanks, not in the bottle as in the champenoise method. It is sometimes blended with Ancellotta to add more intense color and body. By the mid 1970s, much of the Lambrusco that was imported was young, sweet and cheap, and this unfortunately gave it a terrible reputation for decades. Wonderful as an introductory or casual wine, this red tastes very similar to non-alcoholic sparkling grape juice. Its light alcohol content and rich fruity flavor makes it a must-have for your emergency stash. Read More

Tasty and refreshing. Bought a bottle at my local shop for $10.49 only to find they sold out of it when I went back for more. Definitely going to snatch up a few when they get more in stock. Perfect as the weather warms up. Read More

  • Riunite Lambrusco Emilia IGT NV

    Snoothrank:

An excellent wine for the beginning wine taster unsure that they would like wine at all. It is slightly carbonated with a berry flavor. A perfect wine that no one has to try hard to like, unless you've moved on to the more sophisticated. It's also cheap which is, for those of with a slim pocketbook, a good find. Read More
