Lagrein

Common synonyms: Lagarino, Lagrain, Lagrein Kretzer

Parentage of the grape: Teroldego crossed with Schiava gentile

History of the grape: First mentioned in the 17th century in the records of the Muri Benedictine monastery, this variety may hail from the Lagarina valley in Trentino. DNA profiling proved in 2004 that Lagrein is the product of a cross between Schiava Gentile and Teroldego. This grape variety is frequently added in small quantities to lighter, softer varieties such as Pinot Nero and Schiava. In such a role, it contributes acidity, color, and tannin. Lagrein is extremely productive, but when not overcropped, it can make truly formidable wines.

In 1988, Peter May of Melbourne University brought Lagrein to Australia. Small quantities of the variety are planted in the United States as well.

Characteristics of the grape: deep in color, firmly tannic, with good acidity and flavors of chocolate, herb, and plum. Can have a bitter finish.

  • Girlan Lagrein Cuvée Girlan 2011

    Snoothrank:

Intense white wine, pretty strong as for the alcoholic grade (14,5%). Clear and transparent straw yellow, very consistent at sight.Intense aromas with pretty complex flowery and fruity notes (apples).Slightly salty and acid enough, very persistent and equilibrated. An "important" white wine, not suggested for apetizers, but rather with white meat Read More

  • Pojer E Sandri Merlino 2000

    Snoothrank:

"Merlino" was my first discovery in the world of red sweet wines.Fortified with brandy, this red wine from schiava and lagarino grapes is an amazing dessert wine. With notes of mature red fruits and spices (chocolate) a warm, strong taste, it paries great with dark chocolate. Read More

  • Lagrein DOC Kellerei Kurtatsch-Cantina di Cortaccia 2011

    Snoothrank:

Dark ruby red wine with intesive and "tricky" aromas: its first notes may suggest an aged wine, while few and long legs, acid taste tell us this wine as still a long way to go.Very nice in mouth, mostly delicate with the tannins still developing all their potentials.Best tasted in 2 years or more. • Coming from the rugged Dolomite Mountains along the border of Austria in North Central Italy, Lagrein is the iconic red grape of Italy’s Alto Adige region. In some ways, the wines are similar to Syrah, though perhaps with a more obvious appeal and richer fruit in youth. At their best, these are medium-bodied and quite fresh, yet at the same time... • Colterenzio Lagrein Classic 2011

    Snoothrank:

Smoky and a hint reductive with earthy shale and low plum and nettle fruit. This retains a hint of gas on the palate which is decidedly medium weight with light tannins, good acid and a clean and fresh style. Turns gently inky on the back end. Very honest style. 86pts Read More
