Lagrein

Common synonyms: Lagarino, Lagrain, Lagrein Kretzer

Parentage of the grape: Teroldego crossed with Schiava gentile

History of the grape: First mentioned in the 17th century in the records of the Muri Benedictine monastery, this variety may hail from the Lagarina valley in Trentino. DNA profiling proved in 2004 that Lagrein is the product of a cross between Schiava Gentile and Teroldego. This grape variety is frequently added in small quantities to lighter, softer varieties such as Pinot Nero and Schiava. In such a role, it contributes acidity, color, and tannin. Lagrein is extremely productive, but when not overcropped, it can make truly formidable wines.

In 1988, Peter May of Melbourne University brought Lagrein to Australia. Small quantities of the variety are planted in the United States as well.

Characteristics of the grape: deep in color, firmly tannic, with good acidity and flavors of chocolate, herb, and plum. Can have a bitter finish.

    Snoothrank:

What a wonderful nose this has right off the bat, redolent of spicy fruit, ... ... ... This really speaks of Lagrein and while it may lack a bit of complexity it makes up for it with its zesty exuberance. 92p Read More

This Rose is very typical of the region and its unusually pale color belie the lovely and intense notes of watermelon, green oily herbs, and mineral tones on the nose. Snoothrank:

Fantastic penetrating dark purple, all the way thru, what hues? ink black vino. The nose just stinks, wet rocks mixed with onions, soil, even horse manure, I mean this nose is seriously unpleasant and here is where the wine can play mind games with you. The immediate mouth feel is gorgeous, black fruits and such a soft silky mouth feel, you begi... Read More

  • Bortolotti Spumante Lagrein Rosé 2006

    Snoothrank:

It's pink and fizzy by jove, an average shade of pink with some nice almond and violet notes on the nose. The wine is balanced and enjoyable but I can't escape that 1996, round your mates house dancing to the Macarena cheapo fizz vibe. Not a wine for wine lovers, a wine for a party. 79 Points Read More
