Common synonyms: Lagarino, Lagrain, Lagrein Kretzer

Parentage of the grape: Teroldego crossed with Schiava gentile

History of the grape: First mentioned in the 17th century in the records of the Muri Benedictine monastery, this variety may hail from the Lagarina valley in Trentino. DNA profiling proved in 2004 that Lagrein is the product of a cross between Schiava Gentile and Teroldego. This grape variety is frequently added in small quantities to lighter, softer varieties such as Pinot Nero and Schiava. In such a role, it contributes acidity, color, and tannin. Lagrein is extremely productive, but when not overcropped, it can make truly formidable wines.

In 1988, Peter May of Melbourne University brought Lagrein to Australia. Small quantities of the variety are planted in the United States as well.

Characteristics of the grape: deep in color, firmly tannic, with good acidity and flavors of chocolate, herb, and plum. Can have a bitter finish.

  • Heinrich Mayr-Nusser Lagrein Südtirol-Nusserhof Riserva 2005

Somewhat similar to a Mencia. Nose of waxy, perfumed sweet dried fruit with a hint of nail polish. Very ripe not sweet but savory slightly sour fruit, almost chewy, with smoked meat notes. Seems a bit watery mid-palate but has a chewy depth to the wine. Unremarkable finish of fruit and meat notes. Body medium, acid medium. Dry. Read More

Typic bittermandel & tannins, a real fruity and fine light red wine (in the summer drink with under 15 ° C). Combine with Pasta & Sugo, light meat (rabbit, chicken), light hard cheeses, Tyrolean breakfast, smoked meat (Speck, Prosciutto crudo,), Salami, etc. Read More

  • We got started last time with a short list of cellarable wine values for the ... secret, but the Steinraffler Lagrein from J. Hoftatter is a remarkable wine that ages into a thing of beauty, and never fails to impress anybody who tries it! Seriously, it's got something for everybody. It’s not the cheapest wine on the block but at about $40 a ... Read More
