Common synonyms: Lagarino, Lagrain, Lagrein Kretzer

Parentage of the grape: Teroldego crossed with Schiava gentile

History of the grape: First mentioned in the 17th century in the records of the Muri Benedictine monastery, this variety may hail from the Lagarina valley in Trentino. DNA profiling proved in 2004 that Lagrein is the product of a cross between Schiava Gentile and Teroldego. This grape variety is frequently added in small quantities to lighter, softer varieties such as Pinot Nero and Schiava. In such a role, it contributes acidity, color, and tannin. Lagrein is extremely productive, but when not overcropped, it can make truly formidable wines.

In 1988, Peter May of Melbourne University brought Lagrein to Australia. Small quantities of the variety are planted in the United States as well.

Characteristics of the grape: deep in color, firmly tannic, with good acidity and flavors of chocolate, herb, and plum. Can have a bitter finish.

  • EM, I think you gave me a bottle of that wine when you were up here, and I ... ... ... good stuff.  I like Lagrein in general, and that acquitted itself pretty well.  It's usually a little chocolaty, not real biting acids, can be medium light to medium heavy in body, but can be made much lighter if desired.  Shame there isn't more of it, but t... • Imagery Estate Winery Lagrein Paso Robles 2011

Like the 2010, dark black plum color. Fairly nondescript nosesome red fruit, some oily scent. Easy fruity entry. Fruit flavors of red plum, strawberry. Very subdued tannin. Light acid as from peach, without any sugar. Very short finish. Not a complex wine. Easy to drink, but not particularly memorable. Read More

  • OK, I'm pretty sure this one qualifies for inclusion in this conversation.  Lagrein is pretty unsusal for a California wine (like this one), but, who's kiiding who, with the exception of the Sudtirol, it is pretty much an unusual wine from anyplace. And, of course, Paso Robles is just like Alto Adige.Besides Imagery I think Jacuzzi produces a Ca... • "what besides cabs and chards have you tried lately"Don't know ... in the US, was California Lagrein, Nebbiolo and Trousseau. I heartily applaud those efforts. The Lagrein in particular was really interesting. Darker and richer than what I've had from N. Italy but not in the least jammy and overdone, had kind of dusty cocoa overtones on the fi... Read More

  • Thought I'd start a topic to see what "different" wines people are drinking. I've been on a hunt to find wines made from lesser known grapes or from unusual areas. Here's one of each. This is a rose made from Cinsault, not too unusual right? Well this is from the Bekaa Valley in Lebanon. Either they don't make very good wine in Lebanon or this bo... Read More
