Lagrein

Common synonyms: Lagarino, Lagrain, Lagrein Kretzer

Parentage of the grape: Teroldego crossed with Schiava gentile

History of the grape: First mentioned in the 17th century in the records of the Muri Benedictine monastery, this variety may hail from the Lagarina valley in Trentino. DNA profiling proved in 2004 that Lagrein is the product of a cross between Schiava Gentile and Teroldego. This grape variety is frequently added in small quantities to lighter, softer varieties such as Pinot Nero and Schiava. In such a role, it contributes acidity, color, and tannin. Lagrein is extremely productive, but when not overcropped, it can make truly formidable wines.

In 1988, Peter May of Melbourne University brought Lagrein to Australia. Small quantities of the variety are planted in the United States as well.

Characteristics of the grape: deep in color, firmly tannic, with good acidity and flavors of chocolate, herb, and plum. Can have a bitter finish.

  • One region of the wine world I haven't yet conquered (or really paid any attention to at all!) is Italy. This Friday, I'm entertaining some clients at an Italian restaurant, and I'd like to be able to pick a bottle without having *too* long a conversation with the sommelier. The wine list is exclusively Italian.I'll be looking for a red wine, ... Read More

  • So What's the chance that you go to the cellar and pop open a bottle and ... that, but I had opened a $20 Lagrein and a $15 Montepulciano. Hey, I'll give up those two bottles that total $35 for the chances of my next $100+ bottle being a perfect wine, over and over again until my luck runs out. But my chances are good now. So drink up t... Read More
