Lagrein

Common synonyms: Lagarino, Lagrain, Lagrein Kretzer

Parentage of the grape: Teroldego crossed with Schiava gentile

History of the grape: First mentioned in the 17th century in the records of the Muri Benedictine monastery, this variety may hail from the Lagarina valley in Trentino. DNA profiling proved in 2004 that Lagrein is the product of a cross between Schiava Gentile and Teroldego. This grape variety is frequently added in small quantities to lighter, softer varieties such as Pinot Nero and Schiava. In such a role, it contributes acidity, color, and tannin. Lagrein is extremely productive, but when not overcropped, it can make truly formidable wines.

In 1988, Peter May of Melbourne University brought Lagrein to Australia. Small quantities of the variety are planted in the United States as well.

Characteristics of the grape: deep in color, firmly tannic, with good acidity and flavors of chocolate, herb, and plum. Can have a bitter finish.

  • I am a dyed in the wool fan of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlots, Sangiovese's and a few Chardonnays and Pinot Grigio's. I am trying to widen my spectrum to include Pinot Noir's. I live in the Pacific Northwest so the Pinot Noir's are readily available due to the large varieties from Oregon. Before I embark on purchasing some different brands I would l... Read More

  • Alois Lageder Lagrein Alto Adige Südtirol Rosé 2011

    Snoothrank:

This is quite perfumed on the nose with notes of wild raspberries and lingonberries cut through by gentle suggestions of wildflowers and forest floor. There's a nice twang of sour watermelon on entry, then this settles down into a more conventional cherry vein of fruit that is couched in a rather soft, if vividly bright texture that leads to a l... • Tenuta Lageder Beta Delta 2008

    Snoothrank:

A nice, lightly wooded shoe leather and barnyard note greet the nose followed by soft plum skin and jammy black cherry aromas. This is bright and medium-bodied on the palate with a gamy edge to the wild cherry and raspberry fruit on the palate. The tannins are fine grained and add gentle support right through the modestly long finish, which show... Read More

  • Lagrein Morus -Weingut H. Lentsch 2005

    Snoothrank:

Bright and brambly with focused minerality and a hint of smoke. While it has the characteristic Lagrein floral aromas, these are a bit laid back here. Really excellent food wine, especially with cheeses and charcuterie. Read More

  • OK, someone just asked me about where to visit and what to do in Temecula. Don't think I've been there since the very early '90s.I did visit Callaway a few times back in the late '70s into the '80s and thought they were doing great for the locale, but I haven't had any of their bottles in more than a decade. Certainly they were better back then ... Read More
