Common synonyms: Herold Triumpf, Herold Weiss, Schiava Grossa x Riesling Renano We 25/30, Trollinger x Riesling Renano We S 25/30, We S 2530, Weinsberg S 25-30
Parentage of the grape: Kerner is a cross between Schiava Grossa (Trollinger) and Riesling.
History of the grape: Kerner was bred by German scientists in 1969. It is late-budding and frost-resistant, making it ideal for the cool growing climate. It has been used as an ingredient in Liebframilch, but that’s a bit of a waste, since good Kerner is well worth drinking on its own. Best of all, Kerner is named for a local 19th century writer of drinking songs.
Characteristics of the grape: Rielsing-like, with similar floral and fruit aromatics, but not as refined as Riesling.
Regions where the grape currently is important: In Germany, it is grown mostly in the Pfalz and Rheinhessen, as well as in its home, Wurttemberg, and in Franken. It is also grown in England, northern Italy, Japan, and South Africa.

Great value under the bottle-cap/crown cap of this wine! Bottle fermented. Done in the style of champagne, but lacking of any major yeasty/biscuity notes you might typically expect with such. A dry wine with a fairly fine bead, creamy texture, soft acidity/freshness, and surprising complexity. A very longish but subtle finish. Honey, pear, and a... Read More

Perhaps this wine's most striking feature is its intense floral aromas. A fresh velvet mouthful to start followed by a ceiling of tempered acidity. Flavours of peach, starfruit and blood oranges with a nice finish. Read More

This eclectic number is a doppelganger of the California Conundrum (Wagner Family) white and is just as good - if you like adding a good dollop of extra citrus acidity. With 6 grapes in the blend it is surprising how dominant the Pinot Gris and Viognier seem to be. But then I don't actually know the percentage break-out which I suspect is actua... Read More

It says off-dry but still a little too dry for me. German style wines are light & crisp. I think these wines go well with fruit & cheese trays, spicy sausage, brats & mustard. Read More
