Grenache

(aka. Grenache Noir, Garnacha, Cannonau, Lladoner, Tinto Aragones, Alicante)

Traditionally in California, Grenache has mostly been planted in the warm Central Valley, to produce fruity, quaffable reds and pinks. But the emergence of Rhône blends, enthusiastically promoted by a band of winemakers known as the ‘Rhone Rangers’, has sparked an increase in plantings of Grenache in more esteemed California viticultural zones. Significant acreage of this grape is found in Santa Barbara and Monterey counties. Grenache’s ability to produce in warm climates has made it a workhorse varietal not only in California, but also in the warmth of South Australia and South Africa. Grenache-based wines tend to be high in alcohol, with attractive fruit qualities in youth. Grenache’s sweet berry character, makes it a successful candidate for rosé wines, the most famous coming from the southern French appellations of Tavel and Lirac. This hairy-leafed vine produces grapes naturally low in tannin and in color Read more »

  • Capcanes Peraj Ha'Abib Monstant 2012

    Snoothrank:

A full-bodied, deep wine, itll take time to open up. I shook mine in an empty and cleaned-out gefilte fish jar, to add oxidization quickly. But even then, it didnt really shine until about an hour later. On the nose, its spicy and bewitching, a little woodsy laced with cinnamon. But its on the palate that this wine really shines.I mean that litera... • Gabriel Meffre Cotes-du-Rhone "Saint Vincent" 2013

    Snoothrank:

In seeking out some good restaurant whites for the summer, I came across this Rhone white which reflects the inclusion of Roussanne in the blend - lending the nose a subtle white fruit scent of kiwi, gooseberry, fresh concrete and soft herbs. The entry is soft, with spring water cleanliness and pear-like flavours. For the price, you get gentle... Read More

  • M. Chapoutier Cotes du Roussillon Villages les Vignes de Bila-Haut Blanc 2013

    Snoothrank:

This Cotes du Roussillon Blanc has an intriguing nose of pear, a hint of citrus and other (assorted) white fruit and a nice herbal yellow colour. On the palate is a delicious infusion of semi-sweet, almost candied pear, honeydew melon, a bit of salt and spice (reminiscent of spice cake). This wine would be a hit at any summer party or any othe... Read More

  • Le Clos du Caillou Cotes du Rhone 2010

    Snoothrank:

This Cotes du Rhone is extremely inviting with raspberry jam dominating the nose and good cherry-red colour; on entry there is a flood of raspberry, cherry and a hint of leather. Medium finish with unpronounced tannin. Very tasty if not complex, but well made and as it should be. 87 points. Read More
