(aka. Grenache Noir, Garnacha, Cannonau, Lladoner, Tinto Aragones, Alicante)

Traditionally in California, Grenache has mostly been planted in the warm Central Valley, to produce fruity, quaffable reds and pinks. But the emergence of Rhône blends, enthusiastically promoted by a band of winemakers known as the ‘Rhone Rangers’, has sparked an increase in plantings of Grenache in more esteemed California viticultural zones. Significant acreage of this grape is found in Santa Barbara and Monterey counties. Grenache’s ability to produce in warm climates has made it a workhorse varietal not only in California, but also in the warmth of South Australia and South Africa. Grenache-based wines tend to be high in alcohol, with attractive fruit qualities in youth. Grenache’s sweet berry character, makes it a successful candidate for rosé wines, the most famous coming from the southern French appellations of Tavel and Lirac. This hairy-leafed vine produces grapes naturally low in tannin and in color Read more »

  • Domaine Grand Nicolet Cotes-du-Rhone 2011

The 2011 Grand Nicolet CdR is a fine, succulent - even slightly sweet Grenache Noir-based wine sourced through Marquis Wines (Vancouver BC) about 2-3 years back. These wines would go well with the younger set; they have gobs of damson plum, dark cherry and eucalyptus on the palate and sugarplum on the nose. Quite typical, though quality is a n... Read More

  • Joel Gott 'Alakai' Grenache 2012

Had this one with Lunch yesterday at Marcello's Chophouse. Very interesting notes of Sake, in fact, loads of it - will need to try another bottle to see if the Sake smell and taste is an aberration. Medium-full in the mouth, silky, that a long and smooth finish with balanced medium Tannins and Acidity. Stewed Plum and ripe Cherries and White Pep... Read More

  • Casa Castillo "Las Gravas" Jumilla 2012

This is as good a "low key" wine as there is. There a little red berry fruit, a little whisp of smoke, coffee and a little mocha. The mid-palate is fleshy with out a lot of definition but pleasing none-the-less. The finish sees modest tannins matched with equal acidity. Drink now. Paul 89 points Read More

  • Cuvee des 3 Messes Basses 2012

KindredVines offer these TASTING NOTES:Dark garnet in color with purple hues. This wine is an open bouquet combining fruity and peppery aromas which are distinctive of the AOC Ventoux. A well balanced and pleasant wine on the palate with aromas of stewed fruits and hints of cinnamon and clove. Enjoyable fleshy texture and remarkable length. [I a... Read More
