Grenache

(aka. Grenache Noir, Garnacha, Cannonau, Lladoner, Tinto Aragones, Alicante)

Traditionally in California, Grenache has mostly been planted in the warm Central Valley, to produce fruity, quaffable reds and pinks. But the emergence of Rhône blends, enthusiastically promoted by a band of winemakers known as the ‘Rhone Rangers’, has sparked an increase in plantings of Grenache in more esteemed California viticultural zones. Significant acreage of this grape is found in Santa Barbara and Monterey counties. Grenache’s ability to produce in warm climates has made it a workhorse varietal not only in California, but also in the warmth of South Australia and South Africa. Grenache-based wines tend to be high in alcohol, with attractive fruit qualities in youth. Grenache’s sweet berry character, makes it a successful candidate for rosé wines, the most famous coming from the southern French appellations of Tavel and Lirac. This hairy-leafed vine produces grapes naturally low in tannin and in color Read more »

Grenache on Snooth

  • Roger Goulart Cava Brut Rose Gran Reserva 2011

    Snoothrank:

Smooth cherry and watermelon aromas with a floral note and some cranberry. More cherry on the palate with a syrupy texture and dark spice, zesty acidity and buoyant palate of fresh bubbles, this becomes a bit tart towards the finish, ending with a clean cranberry and herb note. Read More

  • According to a YouGov poll, forty-one percent of Americans enjoy wine with ... ... ... Black Hamburg, Dattier, Grenache, and Piquepoul. What makes this wine my one and only is its lively acidity, subtle tannins, and lower alcohol. Characterized by rustic, red berry flavors and a soft, textured mouthfeel, thanks to aging in neutral, French oak... Read More

  • Halcon Esquisto Yorkville Highlands 2016

    Snoothrank:

Something of a volatile nose. Lots of red fruit on the tip of the tongue. Sadly, sweeter than I normally enjoy. When I hold the wine in my mouth for a few seconds, I get a stony flavor or sensation. This wine seems a little bit hot to me--not enough to really bother me, though. Read More

  • Lots of up front red fruit in this one that I had last night: A Grenache, Zinfandel, Petite Sirah blend.  I think the predominant component grape is the Grenache.  So, this is not as big a wine that would have had mostly Zin or PS.  It's just not a very complex or sophisticated wine.  On the other hand, for a clean-out-the-refrigerator day, it w... • Lone Madrone the Will 2012

    Snoothrank:

Wow, big red plum/cherry flavors on the tip of the tongue. Almost an unsweetened chocolate thing mid-palate. Very light on both tannin and acid. Not a particularly sophisticated wine, but something that will go well with burgers or pizza. Read More

  • It's really hard to take a pic of these bottles with the painted-on ... is ... ... is a field blend of Grenache, Petite Sirah and Zinfandel. It's an easy enough wine to drink, but, to me, it's just not very sophisticated.  Candied red fruit on entry and, then, some tarry notes--that actually help it out.  Very light on tannin and not particula... Picpoul Blanc/Grenache Blanc Blend, Grenache Blanc and a Red Field Blend.I don't think I've ever had a domestic Tannat, before.  This was the least tannic version I've ever had.  So, I decided that I'd give it a twirl.Turley:Sorry, the pic is pretty blurry....
