Grenache

(aka. Grenache Noir, Garnacha, Cannonau, Lladoner, Tinto Aragones, Alicante)

Traditionally in California, Grenache has mostly been planted in the warm Central Valley, to produce fruity, quaffable reds and pinks. But the emergence of Rhône blends, enthusiastically promoted by a band of winemakers known as the ‘Rhone Rangers’, has sparked an increase in plantings of Grenache in more esteemed California viticultural zones. Significant acreage of this grape is found in Santa Barbara and Monterey counties. Grenache’s ability to produce in warm climates has made it a workhorse varietal not only in California, but also in the warmth of South Australia and South Africa. Grenache-based wines tend to be high in alcohol, with attractive fruit qualities in youth. Grenache’s sweet berry character, makes it a successful candidate for rosé wines, the most famous coming from the southern French appellations of Tavel and Lirac. This hairy-leafed vine produces grapes naturally low in tannin and in color Read more »

Grenache on Snooth

  • Chateauneuf du Pape. Cuvee Reservee. Domaine du Pegau Southern Rhone Meth 2000

    Snoothrank:

Very delicious acidity. Bordering on a pretty nose, but just rough and smoky enough to keep things interesting. Some candy and mint on the nose. I thought it got progressively stinkier as it opened up. Enjoyable to drink. Read More

  • I really enjoyed the full-bodied flavor of the bottle that the Snooth team cracked open on Friday:http://www.snooth.com/wine/domaine-du-pegau-chateauneuf-du-pape-cuvee-reservee-rouge-2000/ As someone with a so-far limited knowledge of wine, I'm wondering if there's any particular aspect of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines that exist in some of the ... • Les Hauts de la Brune Coteaux du Languedoc 2005

    Snoothrank:

Really liked this! Tremendous value for the price. 80% Syrah, 10% Grenache, 10% Mourvedre. Very aromatically complex - you can smell the terroir on this one. Opened up nicely and developed into something well-structured and rich. While we drank it on its own, it would be wonderful with food! Read More

  • Chapelle St Arnoux Gigondas 2003

    Snoothrank:

Great value for the money. I agree with several reviews that describe it as rough. It is rough or rustic if you're comparing to a chateauneuf du pape. Good acid. Red and black fruits. Long developing finish. I enjoyed it with a prosciutto, cheeses, and olives picnic. Read More

  • Twisted Oak Tempranillo Blend Calaveras County the Spaniard 2006

    Snoothrank:

Light cherries and vanilla on the nose - good use of oak, nice vanilla. Bit tart on the finish, but nice. Bit pricey though. Read More

  • Chateauneuf du Pape. Cuvee Reservee. Domaine du Pegau Southern Rhone Meth 2000

    Snoothrank:

Rich and earthy, sort of a dark soil taste, blackberries and currants compliment mild sugars and slight acidity. Very low tannins betray a delicate wine, and I want that it be bolder. I still very much appreciate this kind of wine. Read More

  • Chateauneuf du Pape. Cuvee Reservee. Domaine du Pegau Southern Rhone Meth 2000

    Snoothrank:

Immediately a lovely meaty nose with bramble and baking spice notes greets the ... the ... strawberry fruit of Grenache. Medium full in the mouth with a touch of obvious alcohol, roast herby and dry on the midpalate with good acidity and soft tannins but a faded core or gently roast fruit, though the glycerin adds some smoothness. More obviou... Read More

  • Chateauneuf du Pape. Cuvee Reservee. Domaine du Pegau Southern Rhone Meth 2000

    Snoothrank:

Strong alcohol but very pleasant nose. Mellow and round flavor that numbs the mouth. Long and elegant silky finish. Extremely enjoyable. Tastes expensive. Read More

  • Chateauneuf du Pape. Cuvee Reservee. Domaine du Pegau Southern Rhone Meth 2000

    Snoothrank:

Deep, crushed fruit nose of dark red berries, spice and light oak. The palate is silky smooth, light but still manages to fill the mouth with a healthy amount of bright red fruits. The tannins on the finish are round, firm, balanced. This is simply delicious. Read More
