(aka. Grenache Noir, Garnacha, Cannonau, Lladoner, Tinto Aragones, Alicante)

Traditionally in California, Grenache has mostly been planted in the warm Central Valley, to produce fruity, quaffable reds and pinks. But the emergence of Rhône blends, enthusiastically promoted by a band of winemakers known as the ‘Rhone Rangers’, has sparked an increase in plantings of Grenache in more esteemed California viticultural zones. Significant acreage of this grape is found in Santa Barbara and Monterey counties. Grenache’s ability to produce in warm climates has made it a workhorse varietal not only in California, but also in the warmth of South Australia and South Africa. Grenache-based wines tend to be high in alcohol, with attractive fruit qualities in youth. Grenache’s sweet berry character, makes it a successful candidate for rosé wines, the most famous coming from the southern French appellations of Tavel and Lirac. This hairy-leafed vine produces grapes naturally low in tannin and in color Read more »

  • Chateau Reynella Port Blend Mclaren Vale Vintage Port 2003

Very nice. Made from Shiraz and Grenache, this Aussie port needs a few hours of breathing to mellow, but once it does, it's lovely. A beautiful tawny with roasted hazelnut on the nose, dried plum, date, and fig on the palate, and candied nuts on the finish. Read More

  • Castillo de Daroca Calatayud 2006

Black plum nose. Sweet, bright fruit immediately upfront in the mouth but then its followed up by very unpleasant resiny, alcoholic, bitter flavors and some late arriving tannin. I keep drinking more because of the nice fruit, but then get punished by the aftertaste. Read More

  • Onix Priorat 2006

Given that I'm giving this thing five full cups, let's start with the bad: there's no discernible vintage on this bottle. "CLÀSSIC" vintage. I don't know what the red symbol is, but I don't like that, either. Nevertheless, this is a damn good wine. Pleasant on the nose and medium-bodied on the palate. If you're like everyone else these days (lo... Read More

  • Quivira Grenache Dry Creek Valley Wine Creek Ranch 2006

Very fresh on the nose with youthfully estery fruit and a strong floral top note. The alcohol is a bit noticeable here though there are lovely sp[ice tones on softly jammy fruit with just a touch of cool melon adding freshness. Front loaded with fruit and surprisingly crisp in the mouth with crunchy fruit and some nice earth and tree bark tones ... Read More

  • Cameron Hughes Grenache Blend Campo de Borja Lot 98 2007

This offers a rich aromatic array of chocolate licorice and raspberry liquor with a sweet over-arching vanilla/powdered sugar character with tinges of earth and buttery oak. In the mouth this is very fruity with a sweet core of mulberry jam with a thick, velvety mouthfeel. Soft tannins and acid make this classic fruit bomb a spicy, grapey easy d... Read More

  • Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge 1994

Old school Chateauneuf rocking the house with brett influenced notes of barnyard and horse adding push and complexity to the textbook notes of garrigue, cherry and mint. Really effusively perfumed and delicious to smell. In the mouth this reveals the lean nature of the vintage with a surprisingly acid driven taut core of red fruits, lovely note... Read More
