Grenache

(aka. Grenache Noir, Garnacha, Cannonau, Lladoner, Tinto Aragones, Alicante)

Traditionally in California, Grenache has mostly been planted in the warm Central Valley, to produce fruity, quaffable reds and pinks. Significant acreage of this grape is found in Santa Barbara and Monterey counties. Grenache’s ability to produce in warm climates has made it a workhorse varietal not only in California, but also in the warmth of South Australia and South Africa. Grenache-based wines tend to be high in alcohol, with attractive fruit qualities in youth. Grenache’s sweet berry character, makes it a successful candidate for rosé wines, the most famous coming from the southern French appellations of Tavel and Lirac. This hairy-leafed vine produces grapes naturally low in tannin and in color Read more »

  • I can't find the ideal match though I haven't strayed from dry whites and reds yet. Correct me if I'm wrong but aged brie has a bit of that moldiness that almost reminds me of TCA. Who wants a wine that complements TCA? If wine did go with TCA then cork taint wouldn't be a fault! Anyway maybe I should venture into the sweeter realm since bluevei... Read More

  • Cigale Shiraz Barossa Valley 2005

    Snoothrank:

40% Grenache, 32% Mourvedre and 28% Shiraz WS90For the price point, I was very impressed with this bottle. Interestingly, the bottle I had a week before I opened this bottle was a Turkey Flat Shiraz. I thought the Cigale was reminiscent of Turkey Flat, which is more than double the price of the Cigale and also garnered super high by WA (95pt... Read More

  • Alban Vineyards Grenache Edna Valley Alban Estate Vineyard 2002

    Snoothrank:

One of the best bottles of wine i've ever had, period. Incredibly concentrated fruit, dark as a bottle of ink. Intense experience of dark fruit, bitter chocolate and mulberry notes. A simply over the top bottle of wine. Read More

  • Vina Borgia Campo de Borja 2005

    Snoothrank:

Possibly one of the BEST values i've ever found. Medium to full body, very fragrant, and incredibly spicy notes of black pepper and currants. Medium finish, tastes like a 20 dollar bottle. Read More

  • Chateau des Tourettes Grenache Vin de Pays de Vauc 2004

    Snoothrank:

Very tight in the bottle, but opens up tremendously with an hour of decanting, releasing a nose of red berries and plum. Nice tannins, serious wine. Incredible at this price range. Probably tough to come by - amazing value. Read More
