Grenache

(aka. Grenache Noir, Garnacha, Cannonau, Lladoner, Tinto Aragones, Alicante)

Traditionally in California, Grenache has mostly been planted in the warm Central Valley, to produce fruity, quaffable reds and pinks. But the emergence of Rhône blends, enthusiastically promoted by a band of winemakers known as the ‘Rhone Rangers’, has sparked an increase in plantings of Grenache in more esteemed California viticultural zones. Significant acreage of this grape is found in Santa Barbara and Monterey counties. Grenache’s ability to produce in warm climates has made it a workhorse varietal not only in California, but also in the warmth of South Australia and South Africa. Grenache-based wines tend to be high in alcohol, with attractive fruit qualities in youth. Grenache’s sweet berry character, makes it a successful candidate for rosé wines, the most famous coming from the southern French appellations of Tavel and Lirac. This hairy-leafed vine produces grapes naturally low in tannin and in color Read more »

  • Bodegas Alto Moncayo Grenache Campo de Borja Veraton 2006

    Snoothrank:

This 100% Garnacha (Grenache) from the up-and-coming hot, dry region of Campo de Borja offers a screaming 15.5% alcohol content but is remarkably self-contained, considering it is practically port-strength. The aromatics are almost scary: wood smoke, Mediterranean wild herbs, farmyard animal and garrigue... The fruit is intense and gripping, hel... Read More

  • Bodegas Ateca Atteca Armas 2005

    Snoothrank:

This 100% Garnacha exudes a smoky, earthy, rustic aroma. It's jammy beyond belief, like a rich plum cake and lashings of blueberry and blackberry preserve. With superb grip and power, this is a distinctive, hedonistic and vibrant wine, with a finish of minerals, stones, violets and attar of roses. Very good indeed. 15% abv, 93 points. Read More

  • Celler Vall Llach Grenache Blend Priorat Idus 2006

    Snoothrank:

It's a little closed on the nose, and not easy to discern the fruit, but you can detect hints of tar, liquorice and a brooding sensuality. Very gratifying on the palate, a delicious port-like complexity, evoking memories and sensations of figs, molasses, caramel and rich fruit compote. This wine is paradoxical it's still young, and therefore ne... Read More

  • D'Arenberg Red Rhone Blend Mclaren Vale the Stump Jump 2006

    Snoothrank:

Probably the least standout-ish of the d'arenbergs I've had. This one was all frontloaded. Yeah, delicious and luscious when shaking hands with the tongue, but vanished pretty quickly. I'll give it a three since I was fairly far along on rose and prosecco when I switched over. Read More
