Grenache

(aka. Grenache Noir, Garnacha, Cannonau, Lladoner, Tinto Aragones, Alicante)

Traditionally in California, Grenache has mostly been planted in the warm Central Valley, to produce fruity, quaffable reds and pinks. But the emergence of Rhône blends, enthusiastically promoted by a band of winemakers known as the ‘Rhone Rangers’, has sparked an increase in plantings of Grenache in more esteemed California viticultural zones. Significant acreage of this grape is found in Santa Barbara and Monterey counties. Grenache’s ability to produce in warm climates has made it a workhorse varietal not only in California, but also in the warmth of South Australia and South Africa. Grenache-based wines tend to be high in alcohol, with attractive fruit qualities in youth. Grenache’s sweet berry character, makes it a successful candidate for rosé wines, the most famous coming from the southern French appellations of Tavel and Lirac. This hairy-leafed vine produces grapes naturally low in tannin and in color Read more »

  • Cellars Baronia Montsant Flor d'Englora Negre Jove 2006

    Snoothrank:

I'll admit that I am in no way a wine fan. I was at Costco of all places and liked the description they gave of this wine and decided to try it. Again I'm not a wine fan but I really enjoy this wine. It's not as dry as other reds I have tried and the taste is very sharp at first and then smooths out, I like that. I went back this evening and ... Read More

  • Domaine Bagnol Cassis Rose 2007

    Snoothrank:

Delicate strawberry and unripe peach on the nose. Delicate fruit on the palate. Good acidity and a touch of spice on palate. Tangy, clean finish with a light crispness you would expect. Read More

  • Vallon des Sources Vacqueyras 2006

    Snoothrank:

Very rich nose - great fruit (strawberries), good bouquet. Mouth was a bit disappointing - structure was very good from front to back, but the fruit was lacking. The tasting notes indicated licorice and a long finish - I picked up a hint of licorice, but the finish was disappointing. Read More

  • Font Caude Montpeyroux l'Esprit de Font 1998

    Snoothrank:

Lots of soy and burnt rubber on the nose which eventually gives way to an elmer's glue smell. Tastes like rehydrated mushroom water at first. Lots of youthful acidity and tannins so this wine will last a while longer. Finish is a bit short. Read More

  • Domaine André Brunel Grenache Vin de Pays de Vaucluse 2006

    Snoothrank:

Some chemical smell at first but a nice background of fresh strawberries. A bit closed on the nose. Alcohol was a bit prevalent and tannins were a bit out of balance. Tasted watered down and overall lacking. Read More

  • R. López de Heredia Tempranillo Blend Rioja Gran Reserva Viña Bosconia 1981

    Snoothrank:

The lovely wild cherry fruit on the nose is gently dusted with warm cinnamon spice and dried floral tones that are backed up by a touch of green tea and a musky, gamy note. Pristine and transparent in the mouth with bright, zesty acids that accentuate the raspberry fruit and balance the earthy, leathery notes that frame the fruit. Turns a touch ... Read More

  • Château la Begude Gigondas 2005

    Snoothrank:

Pours a very deep purple, extremely heavy and after an initial sweetness on the tongue the savoury herbal quality of the wine takes over along with hints of tar, dark fruits, licquorice and pepper. This is the first Gigondas I have ever tasted so have no comparison to make with others but my initial reaction wasn't too impressed. Read More
