(aka. Grenache Noir, Garnacha, Cannonau, Lladoner, Tinto Aragones, Alicante)

Traditionally in California, Grenache has mostly been planted in the warm Central Valley, to produce fruity, quaffable reds and pinks. But the emergence of Rhône blends, enthusiastically promoted by a band of winemakers known as the ‘Rhone Rangers’, has sparked an increase in plantings of Grenache in more esteemed California viticultural zones. Significant acreage of this grape is found in Santa Barbara and Monterey counties. Grenache’s ability to produce in warm climates has made it a workhorse varietal not only in California, but also in the warmth of South Australia and South Africa. Grenache-based wines tend to be high in alcohol, with attractive fruit qualities in youth. Grenache’s sweet berry character, makes it a successful candidate for rosé wines, the most famous coming from the southern French appellations of Tavel and Lirac. This hairy-leafed vine produces grapes naturally low in tannin and in color Read more »

  • Les Deux Rives Corbieres Rouge 2007

Fruity, berry aromas but enough alcohol that it almost burned your nose. Dark inky purple color that left long slow legs down the glass. Dark fruit presents on the tongue along with a finish that ends again with a touch of subtle sweetness and lingers. Nice. Read More

Nice fruit on the nose, very dark fruit, slight tobacco and leather with a very smoky finish. Interesting but not my favorite. I like the label more than I like the wine. Read More

  • Rosemount Estate Red Rhone Blend Mclaren Vale Gsm 2002

I picked up a few bottles of the 2002 Rosemount GSM a few years ago when Trader Joe's had it for $10 a bottle. I can't say I was thrilled with the first bottle I opened, but I recently drank one that I've kept stored and it has aged very well. The flavor is great. Unfortunately, I only have one bottle left. • Château Saint-Roch Red Rhone Blend Côtes du Rhône 2005

Nose had dark fruit including blackberry, a touch of black pepper, and a slightly dusty character as well. The tannins were definitely there but not too huge. Medium body. Somewhat acidic, there's a little bit of a zing on the palate. The only thing I didn't like was the occasional alcohol smell when swirling the wine. Read More

  • Château Saint-Roch Red Rhone Blend Côtes du Rhône 2005

A very nice Côtes-du-Rhône made from Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault that was definitely ready to drink. Medium bodied and with mild tannins and a earthy finish. Hints of raspberries and spice hit you quickly but then dissipate. Very good choice for the price, especially if you want to get a feel for Côtes-du-Rhône. Read More
