Grenache

(aka. Grenache Noir, Garnacha, Cannonau, Lladoner, Tinto Aragones, Alicante)

Traditionally in California, Grenache has mostly been planted in the warm Central Valley, to produce fruity, quaffable reds and pinks. But the emergence of Rhône blends, enthusiastically promoted by a band of winemakers known as the ‘Rhone Rangers’, has sparked an increase in plantings of Grenache in more esteemed California viticultural zones. Significant acreage of this grape is found in Santa Barbara and Monterey counties. Grenache’s ability to produce in warm climates has made it a workhorse varietal not only in California, but also in the warmth of South Australia and South Africa. Grenache-based wines tend to be high in alcohol, with attractive fruit qualities in youth. Grenache’s sweet berry character, makes it a successful candidate for rosé wines, the most famous coming from the southern French appellations of Tavel and Lirac. This hairy-leafed vine produces grapes naturally low in tannin and in color Read more »

Grenache on Snooth

  • Château d'Aqueria Lirac Blanc 2003

    Snoothrank:

The flavors and aromas of this wine were enjoyable yet somewhat subtle. Dark berries including blackberry on the forefront with accents of spice and a touch of wood. Medium-light body with moderate tannins that definitely make themselves known without completely dominating the wine. This wine reminds me of some Cotes du Rhone that I have trie... Read More

  • Saint Chinian Domaine Simeoni Cuvee Sieis 2007

    Snoothrank:

We tasted this not long after it was delivered (i.e. half day) and we only had one bottle of it, so I am not sure how different it would have tasted if left to settle for a week. However, we really liked this wine. Not too easy drinking. I think good value for the money. Read More

  • Domaine de Fontsainte Corbières 2005

    Snoothrank:

I am a huge fan of this wine. It is fresh, easy to drink, a crowd pleaser, but it also has some complexity. Jammy nose filled with toast with butter, strawberry jam, and a hint of lavender. Very elegant and sultry. A very light style of syrah. Read More
