Grenache

(aka. Grenache Noir, Garnacha, Cannonau, Lladoner, Tinto Aragones, Alicante)

Traditionally in California, Grenache has mostly been planted in the warm Central Valley, to produce fruity, quaffable reds and pinks. But the emergence of Rhône blends, enthusiastically promoted by a band of winemakers known as the ‘Rhone Rangers’, has sparked an increase in plantings of Grenache in more esteemed California viticultural zones. Significant acreage of this grape is found in Santa Barbara and Monterey counties. Grenache’s ability to produce in warm climates has made it a workhorse varietal not only in California, but also in the warmth of South Australia and South Africa. Grenache-based wines tend to be high in alcohol, with attractive fruit qualities in youth. Grenache’s sweet berry character, makes it a successful candidate for rosé wines, the most famous coming from the southern French appellations of Tavel and Lirac. This hairy-leafed vine produces grapes naturally low in tannin and in color Read more »

Grenache on Snooth

  • Domaine Lafage Centenaire 2015

    Snoothrank:

This is a fat, juicy, creamy southern wine from Roussillon; with the scent of fresh pears and freshly fallen snow. On the palate, you get a panoply of sweet, spicy white fruit - like Bartlett pears and white pepper - with a touch of sweet cream. This rich vintage has produced a great wine with some aging potential (2-3 years) but no need to wai... Read More

  • Rod poured me some of that Grenache Blanc when I dropped by a month or so ago. I loved it. I was going to raise hell if you weren't wearing the orange vest! Nice report. I'm still getting over a bug we picked up last week so I'll wait til Wednesday to see you. Looking forward to it. Read More

  • Ryan Patrick Grenache Reserve Northridge Vineyard Wahluke Slope 2013

    Snoothrank:

Full bunches of ripe red fruit on the palate - raspberry, cherry and strawberry with strong character and spice and a floral note. Delicate but assertive on entry, this continues to deepen on the palate, delivering more ripe cherry, strawberry and mixed berry fruit, warming mouthfeel, good structure and baking spices through to the finish that l... • Great 1st day.  Weather was off and on all day, showers, sun, hail, more ... ... two syrahs and an orange Grenache Blanc. The GB was quite interesting and seemed to be read to go. The reds on the other hand didn't appear to be anywhere near as ready as the barrel samples at the other wineries. However, the current releases were awesome.  Last ... Read More

  • Bodegas Casa Castillo El Molar 2014

    Snoothrank:

Brilliant ruby red. Suave, smoke infected cherry and dark berry aromas are complemented by touches of violet and cracked pepper. The palate shows very good focus, with a spicy nuance lifting the gently sweet, energetic black raspberry, cherry cola and lavender pastille flavors. Supple, well knit tannins give firmness to the clinging, floral fini... Read More
