Grenache

(aka. Grenache Noir, Garnacha, Cannonau, Lladoner, Tinto Aragones, Alicante)

Traditionally in California, Grenache has mostly been planted in the warm Central Valley, to produce fruity, quaffable reds and pinks. But the emergence of Rhône blends, enthusiastically promoted by a band of winemakers known as the ‘Rhone Rangers’, has sparked an increase in plantings of Grenache in more esteemed California viticultural zones. Significant acreage of this grape is found in Santa Barbara and Monterey counties. Grenache’s ability to produce in warm climates has made it a workhorse varietal not only in California, but also in the warmth of South Australia and South Africa. Grenache-based wines tend to be high in alcohol, with attractive fruit qualities in youth. Grenache’s sweet berry character, makes it a successful candidate for rosé wines, the most famous coming from the southern French appellations of Tavel and Lirac. This hairy-leafed vine produces grapes naturally low in tannin and in color Read more »

  • I've been very pleased with just about everything I've had that ... ... for around $12. A blend of Grenache Blanc and Roussanne, there's some nice acidity but also that kind of almond flavor going along with a bit of lemon pith and some kind of floral note as well. Gonna stock up on this on Read More

    Snoothrank:

I bought three bottles of this wine on the website ... consists of 60% syrah,30% grenache and 10% mourverde. I started it last night withy my supper of bacon and mushroom stew and I did enjoy it.There is some fairly intense blackcurrant, blackberry and licorice style fruit with some soft but well structured tannins. • Château Pesquié Quintessence 2009

    Snoothrank:

The 2009 Quintessence is a fine wine with balanced, structured flavors of sage, eucalyptus and cherry and notes of smoke and spice on the nose. Elegant, smooth and still capable of a few more years in the bottle, this Ventoux is highly recommended - if you can find the vintage. Though somewhat different in style, better value than many Chateau... Read More

  • Limerick Lane Hail Mary 2012

    Snoothrank:

From the back label: 94% Syrah/6% Grenache. Dark murky purple in the glass. Very berry nose. Very easy on the tongue and under the palate. Gentle introduction of black raspberry. Some herbalness. Sufficient acidnoticeable, but complementary to the fruit, not dominating. Very gentle on the tannin. Certainly not a powerhouse wine, but t... Read More

  • Orin Swift Cellars Abstract Rhone Style California 2011

Deep and brooding at this time in it's life - there is mostly red berry fruits, some blackberry, deep cedar, spice and chocolate. It is mouth coating and chewy with good acidity with a looooong aftertaste. 90 points - drink or hold, Paul Read More
