Grenache

(aka. Grenache Noir, Garnacha, Cannonau, Lladoner, Tinto Aragones, Alicante)

Traditionally in California, Grenache has mostly been planted in the warm Central Valley, to produce fruity, quaffable reds and pinks. But the emergence of Rhône blends, enthusiastically promoted by a band of winemakers known as the ‘Rhone Rangers’, has sparked an increase in plantings of Grenache in more esteemed California viticultural zones. Significant acreage of this grape is found in Santa Barbara and Monterey counties. Grenache’s ability to produce in warm climates has made it a workhorse varietal not only in California, but also in the warmth of South Australia and South Africa. Grenache-based wines tend to be high in alcohol, with attractive fruit qualities in youth. Grenache’s sweet berry character, makes it a successful candidate for rosé wines, the most famous coming from the southern French appellations of Tavel and Lirac. This hairy-leafed vine produces grapes naturally low in tannin and in color Read more »

Grenache on Snooth

  • Marrenon Grand Toque Luberon 2012

    Snoothrank:

Tight and focused on the nose with Syrah driven aromas of blue fruit, fine gently meaty spice notes hints of warm red fruit, cracked pepper and baking spice. Lighter bodied in the mouth than the nose suggest, this shows a lovely transparency on the palate with flavors that like the aromas, are driven by the slightly spicy and gamy nature of Syra... • Domaine la Tour Boisee Minervois 2011

    Snoothrank:

A bit smoky on first whiff with slightly spicy and earthy aromas of cherry and date fruit on the nose. Big on entry and moderately firm with fine backing acids and rounded tannins lending this body and richness on the palate. The flavors show a fine blend of black cherry fruitiness with leather and dried herbal notes along with late arriving mu... Read More

  • Don't know D. They bought the property in the 1970s when land in the south ... a mass-production blend of Grenache that he could sell cheaply and Solomon got Parker to give it 90 points. It's something that he happens to be brilliant at BTW, in France and Spain. He's kind of a genius when it comes to getting great $10 wine on the market in the... Read More

  • Perrin & Fils Cotes du Rhone Reserve Blanc 2012

    Snoothrank:

There's something just a bit off with this white Rhone blend. A touch of mustiness (TCA?) on the mid-palate with muted white stone fruit and medium acidity. Not bad but not good either. Expected better from the Perrin Family, the 2011 was much better. Read More

  • Tamarack Cellars Firehouse Red 2012

    Snoothrank:

This one was such a thrill from the moment I opened the bottle till I finished the last drop. This has to be the finest wine I've tasted this year. Mellow entry, aroma is a burst of grape. Vanilla, raspberry, strawberry and a finish that seems to last forever. WOW Read More

  • Tres Picos /11 Garnacha 2010

    Snoothrank:

For me this was a very drinkable wine. Rich red color and light on tannins. Had some blackberry and raspberry notes. I didn't pick up the ashy notes others mentioned, but that could be because I was smoking a cigar with the wine. All in all I would drink this wine again. Read More
