Grenache

(aka. Grenache Noir, Garnacha, Cannonau, Lladoner, Tinto Aragones, Alicante)

Traditionally in California, Grenache has mostly been planted in the warm Central Valley, to produce fruity, quaffable reds and pinks. But the emergence of Rhône blends, enthusiastically promoted by a band of winemakers known as the ‘Rhone Rangers’, has sparked an increase in plantings of Grenache in more esteemed California viticultural zones. Significant acreage of this grape is found in Santa Barbara and Monterey counties. Grenache’s ability to produce in warm climates has made it a workhorse varietal not only in California, but also in the warmth of South Australia and South Africa. Grenache-based wines tend to be high in alcohol, with attractive fruit qualities in youth. Grenache’s sweet berry character, makes it a successful candidate for rosé wines, the most famous coming from the southern French appellations of Tavel and Lirac. This hairy-leafed vine produces grapes naturally low in tannin and in color Read more »

Grenache on Snooth

  • Northern Lights Mirtillo Blueberry Wine NV

    Snoothrank:

Normally not a fan of fruit wine, I found this blend of tame and wild ... ... France and elsewhere with a Grenache panache on the nose (plus jujube). Entry is smooth, light and finish is short but satisfying with acidic blueberry flavours. If on your way to Alaska, stop by at the winery in Prince George. 8 Read More

  • Inspired by VV, I had Rioja last night.  But first some catching ... ... ... It's supposedly all grenache, but it was pretty oaked up.  Would have been better with fattier food prepared more simply.  I think grenache can marry well with some spices, but the oak was getting in the way.  I had a third bottle, a 2015 Dominique Crochet Sancerre, ... • Jeff Carrel "Les Darons" Languedoc France 2014

    Snoothrank:

Wonderful, nose of blackberries, red currant and gives off a strong sense of place. This follows to the palate completely with additional spice, herbal tones, minerality. The tannins and acidity frame and drive a lengthy aftertyaste. Drink now - Paul -92 points. Read More

  • I was a vegetarian for many years, and I'd say more of what I ate went with ... ... as appealing, so pinot, grenache and the like can be more appealing.  But stronger flavored squashes and the like and things that undergo browning, like breadcrumb toppings and the like, also pair well with stronger reds.  High acid reds with tomato based dishe... • Adobe White 2014

    Snoothrank:

This is the 2014 Clayhouse Adobe White, which is a blend of Grenache Blanc, Viognier, and Sauvignon Blanc from Paso Robles. This wine is a nice, enjoyable crisp, aromatic dry fruity white wine which tastes like a cross between a white Loire, and a white Rhone, which makes perfect sense, given the varietals in the blend. It's currently being cl... Read More

  • Limerick Lane 1023 2014

    Snoothrank:

Bright, tart red fruitcherryon entry. Interestingly, enough, the tartness almost suggests citrus, and, going really crazy, orange as much as anything. Some woodiness mid-palate. Medium-bodied. Not much tannin to speak of. A fun, easy-to-drink wine. Read More

  • Ogier Chateauneuf-du-Pape Galets Roules 2010

    Snoothrank:

This Ogier Chateauneuf-du-Pape is wonderful; perhaps the "rolled pebbles" are the answer. In any case, this well-priced wine is redolent of strawberries (yes, somewhat like a deep Burgundy), smooth and food friendly; ready to roll, deep and finishing with the headiness we have come to expect from this region. 89. • Château de Jau Cotes du Roussillon Villages 2014

    Snoothrank:

Browny/root/garnet coloration and decent clarity in appearance....Aromas that are heavy charcoal, Earthy, leather, grilled New York Striploin steak meatiness and lingers on after the initial wafts and being exposed to oxygen. The flavors go back and forth between fruit forward cherry and grape, and smoke/leather/meat. The mouthfeel is medium/f... Read More
