(aka. Grenache Noir, Garnacha, Cannonau, Lladoner, Tinto Aragones, Alicante)

Traditionally in California, Grenache has mostly been planted in the warm Central Valley, to produce fruity, quaffable reds and pinks. But the emergence of Rhône blends, enthusiastically promoted by a band of winemakers known as the ‘Rhone Rangers’, has sparked an increase in plantings of Grenache in more esteemed California viticultural zones. Significant acreage of this grape is found in Santa Barbara and Monterey counties. Grenache’s ability to produce in warm climates has made it a workhorse varietal not only in California, but also in the warmth of South Australia and South Africa. Grenache-based wines tend to be high in alcohol, with attractive fruit qualities in youth. Grenache’s sweet berry character, makes it a successful candidate for rosé wines, the most famous coming from the southern French appellations of Tavel and Lirac. • Halcon Estate Red Rhone Blend "Esquisto" Yorkville Highlands 2012

Bright red color. Strawberry Preserves on the nose with some smokiness. Very bright on the tongue. Lots of red fruit. Something of an effervescence on the tip edges of the tongue. Comfortable tannin and good supporting acid. I think this wine has some mid-term aging potential, (I think various components could be better integrated), but ... Read More

  • Domaine Vindemio Regain Cotes du Ventoux 2011

Really good QPR on this southern Rhone blend of Grenache and Syrah. Fairly fruit forward with red and black cherry, raspberry and a touch of cranberry. There's nice acidity to go with light tannins and a medium finish. Read More

  • Niel Santofimia 2013

Tasting note for the '12 apply to this '13 as well:Initially on the nose there's some earthiness and a bit of Christmas spices (clove?). On the palate this is all about the dark fruits, plum, raisin, dried fig and dried prune. The tannins are somewhat grainy but not over powering. The finish is medium long with the decent acidity lingering for a... Read More

Bearing in mind my mental state (opening a corked wine by a competitor from Rasteau), this wine still meets the boundaries of excellence...beautiful nose of cherry cake that brings on memories of childhood with Grandmother plus the rich cherry liqueur and spice (pepper) on entry plus again the smooth almond bitter finish and we have a winner. 9...
