(aka. Grenache Noir, Garnacha, Cannonau, Lladoner, Tinto Aragones, Alicante)

Traditionally in California, Grenache has mostly been planted in the warm Central Valley, to produce fruity, quaffable reds and pinks. But the emergence of Rhône blends, enthusiastically promoted by a band of winemakers known as the ‘Rhone Rangers’, has sparked an increase in plantings of Grenache in more esteemed California viticultural zones. Significant acreage of this grape is found in Santa Barbara and Monterey counties. Grenache’s ability to produce in warm climates has made it a workhorse varietal not only in California, but also in the warmth of South Australia and South Africa. Grenache-based wines tend to be high in alcohol, with attractive fruit qualities in youth. Grenache’s sweet berry character, makes it a successful candidate for rosé wines, the most famous coming from the southern French appellations of Tavel and Lirac. This hairy-leafed vine produces grapes naturally low in tannin and in color Read more »

  • Vena Cava Big Blend 2012

More blue-purple than red-purple in the glass. Fairly light on the nosesome barnyard hints, some vegetative hints. Under the palate this is a harmless, albeit, non-distinctive wine. Initial tastes are of dried fruitsprunes, raisinswithout the sweetness. An unusual mouth sensationthis wine seems to have the consistency or viscosity of perspir... Read More

  • First part done.So the locals also suggested Jocko's to my wife, and we ... one warmer, with about 14% grenache.  Surprisingly good for a Central Coast Syrah, not overripe or bombastically fruity, recognizably Syrah with nice meaty tones.  The grenache came out more on the finish with a silky red berry note that never took over.  I didn't like... • Ortas le Grand Jas Côtes du Rhône 2013

Rather dark for a CdR with lots of dark fruit on the nose. Sweet dark fruit on entry with little acid and soft tannins. Long finish with a nice bit of redeming licorice. Read More

  • Bodegas Atalaya Laya 2013

Jammy nose, just a hint burnt. Lots of blackberries, with a bit of tangy underripe orange. Pleasing structure. It went well with a pastrami-Swiss sandwich. Read More

  • Domaine Grand Nicolet Rasteau Vieilles Vignes 2010

If you like the Southern Rhone, this wine from the denominated commune (village) of Rasteau is a delight. It bears a perfume of sweet raspberry and cherry, and the entry is a pleasure... there is that grainy, chocolate raspberry coffee flavour throughout - almost overpowering - but not too, too unsubtle. Finish is long and satisfying with tanni... Read More

  • I had a couple Cavallotto Barolos that certainly smelled, umm, poopy upon ... ... ... also carignane, a bit of grenache and counoise.  Tannic as hell when we opened it, mellowed a bit over time.Dave, I've had few bottles of Cahors (including another one that smelled poopy, as the vender told me it would) and it didn't float my boat.&nbs Read More

  • Adelaida Version White Anna's Vineyard 2013

Solid white blend from Adelaida. The Viognier comes through on the nose with ... some butterscotch, while the Grenache Blanc brings along a creamy lemon note. Very nice acidity cleans things up along with a medium long finish. At 14.8% abv the alcohol is not shy but is well balanced with the floral, stone and citrus flavor Read More
