Grenache

(aka. Grenache Noir, Garnacha, Cannonau, Lladoner, Tinto Aragones, Alicante)

Traditionally in California, Grenache has mostly been planted in the warm Central Valley, to produce fruity, quaffable reds and pinks. But the emergence of Rhône blends, enthusiastically promoted by a band of winemakers known as the ‘Rhone Rangers’, has sparked an increase in plantings of Grenache in more esteemed California viticultural zones. Significant acreage of this grape is found in Santa Barbara and Monterey counties. Grenache’s ability to produce in warm climates has made it a workhorse varietal not only in California, but also in the warmth of South Australia and South Africa. Grenache-based wines tend to be high in alcohol, with attractive fruit qualities in youth. Grenache’s sweet berry character, makes it a successful candidate for rosé wines, the most famous coming from the southern French appellations of Tavel and Lirac. • Cantina Santa Maria la Palma Cannonau di Sardegna le Bombarde 2014

    Snoothrank:

Cinnamon spice and black pepper on the nose with light red fruit aromas of candied cherry and raspberry compote. Fresh and lively on the palate this is easy drinking and well balanced with more cherry fruit with strawberry and a bit of cream towards the finish, chunky tannins and a smoky, oaky finish. Very nice. Read More

  • For some people, the food and wine pairing is an art and of utmost ... Syrah ... Syrah or a blend of it like Grenache/Syrah, or even Chateauneuf du Pape.  Beef can take on Cab sav, etc.  This may be a little much to consider, so my advice would be to ask your server or sommelier (if they have one) as to a wine pairing with your meal choice.&nbs Read More
