The Godello grape hails from northwestern Spain. It is most famously planted in the Valderorras region. It is thought to be a very neutral grape, often likened to Chardonnay. Wines made from Godello expres salinity and minerality. Hints of flint and pencil are sometimes present, depending upon the soil in which the Godello grapes were grown. There is a juicy, citrus-based acidity that dominates these wines. Crisp green apple flavors are also present.
The variety was nearly extinct in the 1970s. As such, most vines are very new. However, it is true that cuttings from old vines were used to create the new ones.  The modern breed of Godello was released to market in the mid-1980s.
Godello is also referred to as: Agodello, Agodenho, Agudanho, Agudelha, Agudelho, Agudello, Agudelo, Agudenho, Berdello, Godelho, Godella, Godenho, Ojo de Gallo and Trincadente.

Godello on Snooth

  • Have ever tried this one from Spain ;     Bodegas Abanico Rua ... Blanca, Godello  Niche - but I liked a little better less chilled.  More nuanced as it warmed up.  Paul                                                           Read More

  • Bodegas Abanico Rua Valdeorras 2010

Unique to say the least. Another, in what was a completely different night of wine tasting at the house. Cider vinegar right off the bad, not exacting the kind of intro that we'd thought, but different. After sitting and warming this develops a green herbal quality and a drop of honey that alone doesn't really set off any green lights, but with ... Read More

  • Vina Somoza Godello Sobre Lias 2013

Medium light notes of oregano, melon and lemon brushes the nose with a hint of more spice and minerality in the glass. Chalky green apple and lemon notes in the mouth with a hint of something green showing through and a touch of phenolics as well, this turns steely on the midpalate and nestles down with some butter towards the finish. • Thought I'd start a topic to see what "different" wines people are drinking. I've been on a hunt to find wines made from lesser known grapes or from unusual areas. Here's one of each. This is a rose made from Cinsault, not too unusual right? Well this is from the Bekaa Valley in Lebanon. Either they don't make very good wine in Lebanon or this bo... Read More

  • Well, I have to say that in NYC you have more access to more wine than just ... to CA.Good luck finding a CA Godello though. It's hard enough to find it even from Spain! The grape was almost extinct until a few growers took a chance on it and the best ones can be pretty good, but as EMark said, I don't think most growers have cracked the code ... Read More

  • Jealouser and jealouser of OTThe first Godello from California I've ever seen: Very light and stark.  Quite acidic.  Slightest hints of tropical fruit or green apple flavors.  I like tart wines, and I will finish this one, but, at this point I'm inclined to think that California growers and winemakers have not quite cracked the code on Godello.  Read More

  • Abrente Sonoma Valley Godello 2013

Very light sweet berry nose, but that does not at all predict the mouth sensation. Very tart, which, of course, makes it quite refreshing, but it could use more fruit flavor. There is some hint of tropical fruit and a dose of green apple, but that is, pretty much, it. Slight bitterness at the very back of the palate. Read More

Like a Viognier with a bit more spice. Grassy apple melds with apricot for a long, sweet acidic finish. Excellent value. Great experience with an underwing grape variety! Read More

  • And one more of something slightly off the beaten path.  We really ... ... Spanish white made from the Godello grape. Ripe peach, melon, a hint of lemon and a touch of perfume on the nose and palate. Medium finish with a touch of viscosity. By the way, this got me to 100 different grapes for my Snooth Dauntless Palate trophy, I am really havin... Read More
