Gewürztraminer

Gewürztraminer (aka. Traminer, Traminer Musque)

Gewürztraminer’s direct and obvious charm has made it a popular varietal in almost every corner of the wine world. Excellent examples of ‘New World’ Gewürztraminer have emerged from British Columbia, Oregon, Washington State and in New Zealand, as well as from cooler microclimates in California and Australia. In Europe, distinct and interesting wines are Gewürztraminer based wines are produced in Austria, Germany, and northern Italy. The literal translation of the prefix (Gewürz) is ‘spice’, and its suffix (Traminer) refers to the Traminer grape, which was widely grown around the northern Italian town of Tramin until the 16th century. Although its origins are Italian, it is the ‘red’-skinned form of Traminer, known to the world as Gewürztraminer that have placed it on the world stage. The greatest Gewürztraminer vines are found along the slopes of the Vosgnes Mountains, in France’s Alsace region. Gewürztraminer bottled as a single Read more »

Gewürztraminer on Snooth

  • Evolution 19th Edition

    Snoothrank:

Sokol Blosser is known for its Dundee OR Pinot Noir, but the blends are ... ... Muller-Thurgau, Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer and a host of others. The flavour tends to pear, peach and lychee - possibly suggestive of a goodly portion of Gewurztraminer. Fun stuff and good value. 87 poin Read More

  • Silly me for getting stuck on the merchant and not reading past it in the ... ... ... about even riesling and gewurztraminer. Have lots of raita and lassi handy for the heat, and go with beer, and if so desired, something distilled.Anyway, this was a semi-driveb Read More

  • I'm going to be the contrarian and suggest riesling. Gewurztraminer can be excellent, but it's a stronger, distinctive flavor profile that can sometimes polarize opinions. Riesling can be superb, matches a broader range of food options with its range of subtleties, and is generally appreciated by a broader range of drinkers.Do you have any idea ... Read More

  • Hi Miguel,Both of Gewurztraminer and Riesling grape varietals originated from Germany but they are slightly  different in aromatics and flavor profile. As EMARK said, "Gewurztraminer has a spicy characteristic". Dry Riesling is also acceptable though it is less fruity but everything is in the acidity, texture and intensity. You'd better try both... • I'm not really an expert on these wines (OK, I'm really not an expert ... stone fruit flavors.  Gewurztraminer has a distinctive "spicy" characteristic that puts off some people.  Of course on the flip side it is exactly that spicy characteristic that many people feel allows it to pair well with Asian cuisines. Now, the smart answer is to try t... • Navarro Vineyards White Blend Mendocino County Edelzwicker 2013

    Snoothrank:

Nice and inexpensive Mendocino white blend of Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, Riesling and Muscat. There's not as much aromatics, as I'd expect for this blend. From the glass there is some nice notes of tangerine, ripe peach, a nice creamy texture, medium acidity and a medium finish. Very good QPR. Read More

  • Looking for something special? There is an estate winery on Oliver, BC, called Silver Sage, that has what they call "The Flame". It's an apricot/peach Gewurtz with a VERY hot pepper in it. The first sip is sweet followed by hot. The longer the pepper is in it, the hotter it gets. Or take it out and it doesn't get hotter. Lasts up to a year in th...
