Parentage of the grape: indigenous to Veneto, Italy
History of the grape: Garganega is a white varietal that has been grown in the region for centuries. It is a primary component of Soave, and while there are some 100% Garganega releases, it is more commonly blended at 70% with Trebbiano, Pinot Bianco and sometimes Chardonnay. In the 1970s and 80s, Soave was a very popular bulk wine (as in Soave Bolla), which earned it a reputation for being the stuff of blandness. But it’s been able to shake its image, and high quality, flavorful Soave wines have emerged into the mainstream since then. Garganega is also a key component in Recioto di Soave. Select late harvest grapes are dried on straw mats or hung to dry before pressing into this delectable dessert wine. 
Characteristics of the grape: As Soave: light-bodied, refreshing, slightly acidic, mellow, hints of lemon, white flowers, honeydew melon. As Soave di Recioto: apricot (both fresh and dried), lemon, honey, burnt sugar, orange peel, dates.
