Name of varietal: Garganega
Common synonyms: d’Oro, Decanico, Dorana di Venetia, Lizzara, Ostesa, Ostesona, Recanicu
Parentage of the grape: indigenous to Veneto, Italy
History of the grape: Garganega is a white varietal that has been grown in the region for centuries. It is a primary component of Soave, and while there are some 100% Garganega releases, it is more commonly blended at 70% with Trebbiano, Pinot Bianco and sometimes Chardonnay. In the 1970s and 80s, Soave was a very popular bulk wine (as in Soave Bolla), which earned it a reputation for being the stuff of blandness. But it’s been able to shake its image, and high quality, flavorful Soave wines have emerged into the mainstream since then. Garganega is also a key component in Recioto di Soave. Select late harvest grapes are dried on straw mats or hung to dry before pressing into this delectable dessert wine.

  • Anselmi San Vicenzo 2007

Lemony/waxy aroma with a hint of floral. Very full body that gives a solid punch to the overall flavor. Nice mid-palatte fruitiness with a hint of apricot. Has a mellow sweetness. Finish is a bit short, but seems to build over time while drinking. The tannins on the back end are not too overwhelming. Not excessively dry. White's are not typicall... Read More

  • Az. Agr. la Biancara Gambellara Taibane 1996

Big VA on the nose with intense crayon note and hints of Pro-Keds under the lightly spiced, dried apricot tones. Fluid and soft on entry then turning flannelly with caramel tinged orchard fruit notes that dip a touch on the back end then come throttling back with a particularly clear finish which has an almost butter cream top note. Lovely lengt... Read More
