Garganega

Name of varietal: Garganega

Common synonyms: d’Oro, Decanico, Dorana di Venetia, Lizzara, Ostesa, Ostesona, Recanicu

Parentage of the grape: indigenous to Veneto, Italy

History of the grape: Garganega is a white varietal that has been grown in the region for centuries. It is a primary component of Soave, and while there are some 100% Garganega releases, it is more commonly blended at 70% with Trebbiano, Pinot Bianco and sometimes Chardonnay. In the 1970s and 80s, Soave was a very popular bulk wine (as in Soave Bolla), which earned it a reputation for being the stuff of blandness. But it’s been able to shake its image, and high quality, flavorful Soave wines have emerged into the mainstream since then. Garganega is also a key component in Recioto di Soave. Select late harvest grapes are dried on straw mats or hung to dry before pressing into this delectable dessert wine.

  • Pieropan Calvarino Soave Classico 2006

    Snoothrank:

Soave is the wine and Pieropan is the master. This over-the-top product just shows what craftsmanship can achieve; here, the neutral but appealing mineral highlights are so smooth and thirst quenching it is like drinking slightly infused spring water from some hidden source high in the mountains. The closest profile on the nose that I can conj... Read More

Wonderfully fresh and fragrant. Aromas of pear and peach with lavender and a bit of fresh cut grass. On the palate it shows finesse and vibrancy with apple and lemon with minerals showing on the finish. Paired perfectly with a pumpkin ravioli in sage butter sauce. Read More

  • Ca Rugate Mt Fio 2007

    Snoothrank:

A very good, clean, neutral, refreshing Soave Classico. Color of light straw, with a muted somewhat stem-like nose - but not unexpected for this type of wine. Very clean, light and refreshing entry with a short to medium finish. Caramel and ice creamsicle notes predominate. A very classy, representative wine of the region from one of the bet... Read More

  • Anselmi White Blend 2007

    Snoothrank:

Subtlety is the name of the game here with Anselmi's almost Soave. Citrus and pear mingle with a touch of oak and a dab of refreshing acidity. An easy drinking summer quaff. Read More
