Name of varietal: Garganega
Common synonyms: d’Oro, Decanico, Dorana di Venetia, Lizzara, Ostesa, Ostesona, Recanicu
Parentage of the grape: indigenous to Veneto, Italy
History of the grape: Garganega is a white varietal that has been grown in the region for centuries. It is a primary component of Soave, and while there are some 100% Garganega releases, it is more commonly blended at 70% with Trebbiano, Pinot Bianco and sometimes Chardonnay. In the 1970s and 80s, Soave was a very popular bulk wine (as in Soave Bolla), which earned it a reputation for being the stuff of blandness. But it’s been able to shake its image, and high quality, flavorful Soave wines have emerged into the mainstream since then. Garganega is also a key component in Recioto di Soave. Select late harvest grapes are dried on straw mats or hung to dry before pressing into this delectable dessert wine.

Nose was islandish. A slight hint of saltwater perhaps. Slow rising melon with a medium ripe Mellon nose. The taste. Medium acid almost low. No real finish. I'm a bit at a loss when tasting this varietal. Will pick up a few different bottles and modify my review accordingly. Read More
