Garganega

Name of varietal: Garganega

Common synonyms: d’Oro, Decanico, Dorana di Venetia, Lizzara, Ostesa, Ostesona, Recanicu

Parentage of the grape: indigenous to Veneto, Italy

History of the grape: Garganega is a white varietal that has been grown in the region for centuries. It is a primary component of Soave, and while there are some 100% Garganega releases, it is more commonly blended at 70% with Trebbiano, Pinot Bianco and sometimes Chardonnay. In the 1970s and 80s, Soave was a very popular bulk wine (as in Soave Bolla), which earned it a reputation for being the stuff of blandness. But it’s been able to shake its image, and high quality, flavorful Soave wines have emerged into the mainstream since then. Garganega is also a key component in Recioto di Soave. Select late harvest grapes are dried on straw mats or hung to dry before pressing into this delectable dessert wine.

Garganega on Snooth

  • I run the wine courses at one of the UK’s leading culinary academies and ... and ... are better for Garganega, the star grape variety of Soave”, is the message. Soave is often 100% Gargenega but Italian law does allow for 30% of other varieties, namely Trebbiano di Soave, Chardonnay and Pinot Bianco, although it’s Trebbiano that’s generally t... Read More

  • I Stefanini Monte di Fice Soave Superiore Classico 2014

    Snoothrank:

Complex aromas are nutty and earthy on the nose with notes of oak and dried peach, apricot and lemon. Nicely spiced and wooded in the mouth with restrained citrus that brightens the palate alongside fruit notes of golden berries, fresh melon and green apple with a zesty, bold finish. Read More

    Snoothrank:

Nutty and fresh in the glass with lemon notes and emollient hints of floral sweetness on the nose. This dances in the mouth with bright citrus, touches of pineapple and green apple fruit and a tart note towards the finish that plays against a hint of cream. Read More

  • I Stefanini Il Selese Soave 2015

    Snoothrank:

Lightly spiced aromas of pear, lychee and white blossom. Juicy and full on the palate with good acidity, this is nicely balanced with white peach opening the way for tart citrus and lemon merengue at the finish. Read More

  • Wine myths are often unspoken but incredibly pervasive. Their looming presence ... ... soils are heaven for the Garganega grape, which produces wines with abundant minerality, bright floral tones and crisp acidity. There are steely and mineral-laden versions and there are rounder, oak-aged versions — plenty of styles and wines to explore. And,... Read More

  • Pieropan Soave Classico 2014

    Snoothrank:

Juicy aromas of pineapple and lemon with a bit of heat and spice. Medium-light bodied in the mouth, this is fairly simple but refreshing with notes of lemon and light melon, a hint of herb and a medium-short finish. This wine would pair excellently with a variety of delicate foods because it is unassuming and approachable while still having enou... Read More
