Name of varietal: Garganega
Common synonyms: d’Oro, Decanico, Dorana di Venetia, Lizzara, Ostesa, Ostesona, Recanicu
Parentage of the grape: indigenous to Veneto, Italy
History of the grape: Garganega is a white varietal that has been grown in the region for centuries. It is a primary component of Soave, and while there are some 100% Garganega releases, it is more commonly blended at 70% with Trebbiano, Pinot Bianco and sometimes Chardonnay. In the 1970s and 80s, Soave was a very popular bulk wine (as in Soave Bolla), which earned it a reputation for being the stuff of blandness. But it’s been able to shake its image, and high quality, flavorful Soave wines have emerged into the mainstream since then. Garganega is also a key component in Recioto di Soave. Select late harvest grapes are dried on straw mats or hung to dry before pressing into this delectable dessert wine.

Garganega on Snooth

  • Pieropan Soave Classico 2014

Juicy aromas of pineapple and lemon with a bit of heat and spice. Medium-light bodied in the mouth, this is fairly simple but refreshing with notes of lemon and light melon, a hint of herb and a medium-short finish. This wine would pair excellently with a variety of delicate foods because it is unassuming and approachable while still having enou... Read More

  • The beginning of Spring marks the beginning of several “seasons” as ... ... Croce: Retail $30. 100% Garganega. Floral aromatics added on top of stone fruit. A fuller bodied white, this is one of those white wines that really wants to be a red–bold with racy acidity, this could handle a wide variety of cuisine. 92 Points. 2013 Château Miraval C... • La Fiera Soave 2012

Parmesan cheese and green apple aromas open for this inviting and interesting blend. Flavors are tart and refreshing, with lemon zest, melon and aged cheese rind. There's enough acidity to prop up the wine until the very end, where it falls off a bit. Not a wine for everyone but if you're a fan of a wine with cheese notes, this is truly delicious. Read More

Interesting Italian white from the garganega grape. Nice and light mix of citrus and stone fruit. Creamy but not too tart lemon meringue with a bit of a floral note. Not overly complex but decent acidity and a medium finish. Read More
