Gamay

Name of varietal: Gamay

Common synonyms: Gamay Noir à Jus Blanc, Bourgignon Noir, Game, Petit Bourgignon, Petit Gamai, Petite Lyonnaise

Parentage of the grape: unknown

History of the grape: Legend has it that it was brought over by the Romans in the first century BC to the town of Beaujeu, near Beaune, in the Burgundy region of France. In the mid 1300s it was cultivated as a relief from the strains of the Black Death. It’s much easier to grow than Pinot Noir, which is the distinguished red grape of Burgundy, and can ripen up to two weeks earlier. However, in 1395, the Duke of Burgundy, Philippe le Hardi (Philip the Bold), signed an edict outlawing the grapes. He said they were “inflame and deloyal” (despicable and disloyal) and taking too much space from the noble grape Pinot Noir. In 1459, Philippe le Bon (Philip the Good), grandson of Le Hardi, signed another edict reaffirming his family’s distaste for the varietal, afraid their Read more »

  • Fleurie Aoc 2008

    Snoothrank:

Heavy on the cherry. Perhaps a tad more acidic than I'd like. Nowhere near as bright and fruity as I remember last year's being. That said, I like this much more than other Nouveau I've had so far this year. If you're going Nouveau, this would be the one I'd grab. Read More

  • Mommessin Morgon 2008

    Snoothrank:

There's really no such thing as bad Beaujolais, I've found. Even by Beaujolais standards, this wine is fruity like Hawaiian punch, completely uncomplicated, and festive. The sort of thing you might make party sangria out of.Cheap and fun. If you're looking for something beyond a soda-pop wine, look elsewhere. Read More

  • Labouré-Roi Beaujolais Nouveau 2008

    Snoothrank:

Banana and tropical fruit with tart acidity and a light body. I couldn't resist the temptation to try at least one more Nouveau this year. Probably not the best of the bunch, but not too bad either. Read More

  • Saint-Amour Aoc 2005

    Snoothrank:

First Beaujolais from this Cru. Chilled for about 15 minutes before serving. Light to medium bodied with distinct red berry tasted leading up to a cheery finish that slightly lingered. Very light and easy to drink. Good buy for a Cru Beaujolais in this price range... Read More

  • Saint-Amour Aoc 2005

    Snoothrank:

Red fruit with cherry flavors predominating. Medium-light body and tannins. A lighter Cru Beaujolais but still a good one. The texture and body of this reminded me a lot of pinot noir from Burgundy. A high 3.5 rating. Read More
