Furmint

Name of varietal: Furmint

Common synonyms: Most common are Sipon, Mosler, Moslavac Bijeli and Zapfner with dozens more derivations of those spellings.

Parentage of the grape: indigenous to either Hungary or Italy

History of the grape: Exact details of Furmint’s origins are a bit murky. It is known that Hungarian King Bela IV ordered the planting of Furmint after most of the country’s vineyards were devastated by the Mongolian invasion in the 13th century. Whether the grape originated there before or was brought over from northern Italy during this mass replanting is unclear. The name of the grape derives from the word “froment,” part of the Latin “fromentum,” meaning “wheat,” (referring to its golden-tan color). What we know for sure is this is the primary blending grape of the spectacular Hungarian dessert wine, Tokaji (along with a small percentage of Harslevelue and sometimes Muscat). Its thin skins make it highly susceptible to Botrytis cinerea Read more »

  • Tokaji Betsek 6 Puttonyos the Royal Tokaji Wine Company 2000

    Snoothrank:

94 points. The nose is rich with amber incense, rose petal, caramel, and a note of something slightly smoky. There is also a brown butter note, some subtle nuttiness, and a hint of citrus, with pretty strong baked goods and marmalade components. The palate opens luxuriously sweet with honey dripped apricots, flinty stone, and delicate floral notes... • The Royal Tokaji Wine Co. Tokaji Aszú 5 Puttonyos Birsalmás 2006

    Snoothrank:

95 points. In the glass this wine looks the way that it tastes; golden like sunshine. The color alone is impressive, with its intense liquid gemstone cast, but the nose is extraordinary. The blend of different components is fascinating. I immediately pick up on a vague graphite tone, but it leads strongly into something that I can only describe a... Read More

  • Oremus Furmint Tokaji Dry Mandolás 2005

    Snoothrank:

This wine is perhaps at the end of its tether in terms of lifespan - although still quite enjoyable and drinkable in its fiery, hot kind of way. A number of barnyard-like scents greet the nose(wet straw comes to mind) along with some brandied fruit like figs, dates and raisins. This wine meets the tongue with a rather sharp drying effect (yet f... Read More

  • Beres Furmint 2007

    Snoothrank:

Nose is very classical: lemon, lime, green apples. Like some chardonnays or recently tried Monte del Fra CustozaMouth very, very pleasant. Simple, nice acidity, easy drinking. Excellent solo. I suppose with dishes tooPrice is very approachable, that's why my mark is so high. Read More

  • Blue Label Tokaji Aszu 5-Puttonyos. the Royal Tokaji Co 2005

    Snoothrank:

Was expecting a lot from this given the praise and the fame and after tasting I have to say its very good but wasn't completely blown away. Very deep amber, good consistancy you would expect from a dessert wine. Rich, sweet with primarily apricot, peach and tangerine with a slightly chalky finish. I'd easily have it again but there are so many o... Read More
