Furmint

Name of varietal: Furmint

Common synonyms: Most common are Sipon, Mosler, Moslavac Bijeli and Zapfner with dozens more derivations of those spellings.

Parentage of the grape: indigenous to either Hungary or Italy

History of the grape: Exact details of Furmint’s origins are a bit murky. It is known that Hungarian King Bela IV ordered the planting of Furmint after most of the country’s vineyards were devastated by the Mongolian invasion in the 13th century. Whether the grape originated there before or was brought over from northern Italy during this mass replanting is unclear. The name of the grape derives from the word “froment,” part of the Latin “fromentum,” meaning “wheat,” (referring to its golden-tan color). What we know for sure is this is the primary blending grape of the spectacular Hungarian dessert wine, Tokaji (along with a small percentage of Harslevelue and sometimes Muscat). Its thin skins make it highly susceptible to Botrytis cinerea Read more »

  • Hi, I've found this Hungarian Pinot Noir wine on an online pharmacy here:http://www.my-lifespan.com/redwinehighinresveratrol.htmlThey claim it to be therapeutic for health, saying it's a special brand wich may lower chloesterol, and help keep a good cardiovascular function, as it's a unique version. I've actually bought  and tasted it, and I mus... Read More

  • Thanks, Richard, for all the input.  Furmint?  Rkatsiteli?  I have a new list to look up when I get time.As for selling out the Rosé so easily, you have to remember how small we are:  19 cases of Rosé produced in 2012; 37 cases of Pinot Gris produced in 2012.  Both sell out very quickly and we always have a list in the fall of people who want mo... • Emark, I was about to click off this thread, thinking that enough had been ... ... a super-high acid grape like Furmint (base of lots of Tokaji) or Chenin or Riesling?  In fact, only two sweet wines really got me to reconsider the whole field.  One was that crazy Tokaji Eszencia we had at Snooth HQ when GdP hosted.  The second was... wait for ... • Predisposed to big, jammy, layered wines. I love California Zins (especially Paso Robles and Russian River areas). Argentina for Malbec, Spain for Rioja Riserva, and Italy for Primitivo, Nebbiolo, Gattinara and great finds among Aglianico, Maremma and Morellino di Scansano.  On the lighter side, afternoon quaffs can include terrific Prosecco, ni...
