Furmint

Name of varietal: Furmint

Common synonyms: Most common are Sipon, Mosler, Moslavac Bijeli and Zapfner with dozens more derivations of those spellings.

Parentage of the grape: indigenous to either Hungary or Italy

History of the grape: Exact details of Furmint’s origins are a bit murky. It is known that Hungarian King Bela IV ordered the planting of Furmint after most of the country’s vineyards were devastated by the Mongolian invasion in the 13th century. Whether the grape originated there before or was brought over from northern Italy during this mass replanting is unclear. The name of the grape derives from the word “froment,” part of the Latin “fromentum,” meaning “wheat,” (referring to its golden-tan color). What we know for sure is this is the primary blending grape of the spectacular Hungarian dessert wine, Tokaji (along with a small percentage of Harslevelue and sometimes Muscat). Its thin skins make it highly susceptible to Botrytis cinerea Read more »

  • Hetszolo Tokaj Furmint Dry 2006

    Snoothrank:

Think I got some unusual mirabelle (sweet yellow plum) character in nose & mouth as it wamrs up...subtle flower/herb notes unfortunately fade into indefinition rather than evolve. Still my current alternative to Bruno Giacosa Roero Arneis for a food-friendly ( I cook an herby-spicy Caribbean veggie scramble variation) balanced, perfumed white. Read More

I have come across some in restaurants but they either don't list the brand/vineyard or I forget what it was. And of course it's not li... Read More

  • Need a little help on this matter. My wine guy suggested many wines to me most out of tanks, like it was better than sitting in oak. Can someone explain the main differences. My take so far is that American oak gives a Vanilla flavor to the wine(is this right or wrong)? And why do the French think their oak is better? Thanks Read More

  • Hello all,Just joined Snooth, probably should have some while ago, regardless discussing Chenin Blanc has been on my mind for sometime. As a Sommelier, and HUGE fan of South Africa's vinous treasures, I am very familiar with the Chenin Blancs of the new world. That being said, I came across this nice article about Chenin Blanc and wanted to see ... Read More
