Name of varietal: Tocai Friulano (Friulano)

Common synonyms: Blanc doux, Cinquien, Istarski Tokay, Malaga, Mosler, Sauvignon de la Correze, Sauvignon gros, Sauvignon à gros grains, Sauvignonasse, Sauvignonazz, Sauvignon vert, Tocai bianco, Tocai Italico, Tokai Italiano, Tokay, Trebbianello

Parentage of the grape: Unknown, but it has been proven through DNA testing that there is no relationship between this grape and either Hungarian Tokaji or Alsatian Tokay (Pinot Gris). It is, however, the same grape as Sauvignonasse.

History of the grape: Though Tocai Friulano was first mentioned in the 19th century, the grape in question was probably Furmint, perhaps sparking the association with Tokaji. In 1932, a new wine appeared under the same name. This one turned out to be the minor French grape Sauvignonasse, which is the variety grown under the name Tocai Friulano today. Recently, the Hungarians managed to persuade the EU to ban the use of all forms of the term Tocai by anyone except Read more »

  • Larkmead Vineyards Tocai Friulano Napa Valley 2010

    Snoothrank:

The nose was rich yet fresh like spring with a bouquet of white flowers, minerals, apricot, almonds and butter. On the palate it was full and luxurious with inner floral and spice notes, a hint of herbs and white pit fruits. It coated the palate before being wisp'd away by the wines vibrant acidity. The finish was long with lingering flowers and... Read More

  • Millbrook Winery Tocai 2011

    Snoothrank:

Nicely aromatic with notes of tree bark, herb and a hint of minty spice accenting the pear and white peach fruit. A lot of trapped CO2 here lends this a bit of a spritz on the palate. Nice, fairly rich feel in the mouth, this has classic bitter apple, pear, almond and subtle herb flavors. The acid is bright but well integrated lending this a lar... Read More
