Name of varietal: Tocai Friulano (Friulano)

Common synonyms: Blanc doux, Cinquien, Istarski Tokay, Malaga, Mosler, Sauvignon de la Correze, Sauvignon gros, Sauvignon à gros grains, Sauvignonasse, Sauvignonazz, Sauvignon vert, Tocai bianco, Tocai Italico, Tokai Italiano, Tokay, Trebbianello

Parentage of the grape: Unknown, but it has been proven through DNA testing that there is no relationship between this grape and either Hungarian Tokaji or Alsatian Tokay (Pinot Gris). It is, however, the same grape as Sauvignonasse.

History of the grape: Though Tocai Friulano was first mentioned in the 19th century, the grape in question was probably Furmint, perhaps sparking the association with Tokaji. In 1932, a new wine appeared under the same name. This one turned out to be the minor French grape Sauvignonasse, which is the variety grown under the name Tocai Friulano today. Friulano on Snooth

  • La Viarte Friulano Colli Orientali del Friuli 2012

Really nice Italian Friulano. This was full of light lemon pith, a touch of creaminess along with the moderate acidity. Fairly smooth, well balanced and refreshing. Read More

  • Marco Felluga Collio Friulano 2012

Fairly nice Italian DOC Friulano. There's a touch of mustiness on the nose but the palate has some interesting wet stone, spice and overripe lemon. Nice acidity and a fairly long minerally finish. Read More

  • Conti Formentini Friulano Collio 2011

Finely floral on the nose with a gentle underlay of grassy, herbal tones, a hint of spice and some peach and lemon aromas. Somewhat rich on entry, this quickly gains focus in the mouth as it delivers fairly straightforward flavors of minty toned melon with a touch of a honied quality. Rather large scaled and rich in the mouth, this ends with so... Read More

  • Palmina Tocai Friulano Santa Ynez Valley Honea Vineyard 2012

A little flinty on the nose with suggestions of honeycomb, crab apple, dried polleny flowers and a hint of almond over bright, mineral notes. Moderately rich and bright on entry with really fine supporting acids in a style that is just a bit lean, perhaps vintage related, though this delivers nice citrus pith and almost honey flavors on the palat... • Trying some new things yesterday...first an '09 Grillo Friulano. Lovely nose of apple, peach, honey, and almonds. The powerful acidity overwhelms the fruit by a pretty wide margin on the palate...might be a nice pair with seafood, but I just couldn't hang with this son of a gun in the end. My mouth is still burning this morning, and this is the ... Read More

$ 14 . Smokey and floral on the nose with hints of brie, dusty minerals and lots of chalk and a touch of green herb. On entry this feels just a touch loose, but it firms up nicely, wrapping a creamy gauze of pear and apricot fruit around a spice of mineral and bitter almond flavors. There's nice weight here, but it remains refreshing, with a ze... Read More
