Parentage of the grape: Unknown

History of the grape: Fiano hails from Campania, where much of Italy’s viticultural heritage remains preserved. The Romans used this grape to make a wine called Apianum high in the forested hills around the town of Avellino. Though Fiano is grown throughout the area, all the way down to the coast, these hills are still where the best Fiano comes from. Indeed, people say that those woods are the source of Fiano’s distinctive wild, piney, herbaceous flavor. In 1980, the area was hit by an earthquake, which destroyed its quaint, medieval wine towns. They still make wine from this ancient variety, however. Some producers have attempted to age Fiano in new oak, but most agree that it is too delicate for this treatment.

  • Perhaps we could use a place to share recent purchases...Here are some '12 Burlotto Langhe Nebbiolo, which came highly recommended from a trusted friend who just got back from a month in Italy. I'm not seeing many available in the States quite yet, but was happy to find these locally. Read More

  • dvogler - there is indeed a trademark issue if you use the term ... Mourvedre, Cinsault, Fiano, etc., did not. More recently, people have suggested adding Tempranillo and a few others.I think it's an idiotic conversation to be having. The idea of "noble" grapes has to do only with prejudice and limited experience. In the 1980s California winemak... Read More

  • Good news! I've been invited to my first wine makers dinner! Needless to say, I'm excited about the opportunity. • Sometimes your plans don't exactly work out as one anticipates. Say a trip ... When will I be writing about Fiano I ask myself, or domestic Montepulciano and Sangiovese blends? Not in the foreseeable future I am sure. So I'm  left with these notes, bound to get lost to time unless of course I just decided to publish just these notes,  and focu... Read More

Gorgeous nose, all minerally and dusty, spicy with hints of mint draped over bright white floral tones and a little melony fruit. a little melon. Entering the mouth with just a little richness, this is very expressive with gorgeous lemon oil, subtle peach, and almond milk flavors. Theres an engaging touch of astringency lending this some tactile... Read More

  • Oliver's Taranga Fiano 2012

AUD$24. This wine has a clear, light straw-golden colour. Aromatically, one could be fooled into thinking it was a Chardonnay. It has aromas of lemon/lime citrus, raw cashew nut and strikingly fresh minerality. The latter is more prominent compared to typical Chardonnays, and of course there is the absence of any oak influence. Rich flavours of ... Read More
