Fiano

Common synonyms: Apiana, Apiano, Fiana, Fiano di Avellino, Fiore Mendillo, Foiano, Latina Bianca, Latina Bianca di Barletta, Latino, Latino Bianco, Minutola, Minutolo, and Santa Sofia

Parentage of the grape: Unknown

History of the grape: Fiano hails from Campania, where much of Italy’s viticultural heritage remains preserved. The Romans used this grape to make a wine called Apianum high in the forested hills around the town of Avellino. Though Fiano is grown throughout the area, all the way down to the coast, these hills are still where the best Fiano comes from. Indeed, people say that those woods are the source of Fiano’s distinctive wild, piney, herbaceous flavor. In 1980, the area was hit by an earthquake, which destroyed its quaint, medieval wine towns. They still make wine from this ancient variety, however. Some producers have attempted to age Fiano in new oak, but most agree that it is too delicate for this treatment.

Fiano on Snooth

  • DMcker, we are on exactly the same wavelength on this.  I'd divide ... he specifically calls out Fiano and Falanghina.  Hmm, seems I need to be wearing my tin hat more to prevent him reading my mind.  (Did anyone else notice that he referenced red wine in television shows right after our "The Good Wife" discussion?)&nbs Read More

  • Okay, I'm providing wine for my family (or I hope so, or I won't have ... ... Aussie wines?  Or a Fiano or Falanghina from Italy, which can regularly come in for $15?  (Reading DMcker's advice after first draft--great minds think alike.) Liveli makes a good Fiano that is pretty widely available. Good sparkling, like a sparkling Chenin from the... Read More

  • Terredora di Paolo Fiano di Avellino 2013

    Snoothrank:

Flowery and fruity, pungent nosegeranium hints, lots of citrus, some tropical (pineapple?). Very refreshing on the tongue. Citrus acid is pretty strong, and I think that is giving the refreshing dimension. Something of candied fruits on the back of the palate and the aftertaste. Read More

  • dvogler - there is indeed a trademark issue if you use the term ... Mourvedre, Cinsault, Fiano, etc., did not. More recently, people have suggested adding Tempranillo and a few others.I think it's an idiotic conversation to be having. The idea of "noble" grapes has to do only with prejudice and limited experience. In the 1980s California winemak... Read More

The dinner is going to be with Gilles Nicault from Long Shadows next week.Naturally I'll be doing my homework in advance to learn what I can and think about good questions I'd like to ask. I know that Long Shadows has been discussed h... Read More

  • Sometimes your plans don't exactly work out as one anticipates. Say a trip ... When will I be writing about Fiano I ask myself, or domestic Montepulciano and Sangiovese blends? Not in the foreseeable future I am sure. So I'm  left with these notes, bound to get lost to time unless of course I just decided to publish just these notes,  and focu... Read More
