History of the grape: The name means “little sweet one” in Italian. Dolcetto, along with Barbera and Nebbiolo is one of the prized grapes of the Piedmont region in Italy, with evidence that it has been growing there for many centuries. More recently the trend is for bolder versions made from grapes that have been given a longer hang time to amplify their power and ageworthiness, but this also results in raising its alcohol levels. For this reason, Dolcetto can now be found in the traditional light style as well as big concentrated styles. Wines labeled “Superiore” are often a good tip that these are older Read more »

  • So our friend hhotdog had a bad experience with mourvedre (aka monastrell, mataro), but he's game to try again.  I say we come up with some recommendations.  Appellations, labels, prices and your best shot at describing it.  I'll look on my list at home and figure out just what it was I drank a week or so ago that was pretty good.  (Good enough ... • Ada Nada Dolcetto d'Alba Autinot 2003

    Snoothrank:

Very decent dolcetto, with high acidity, spicy character and lots of earthy aromas. Hints of black pepper, vanilla and dark chocolate in the finish. Already a bit passed its peak, if you find a bottle do not keep it too long... Read More

  • Monferrato Dolcetto Nibio Cascina Degli Ulivi 2005

  • Mascarello Dolcetto Bricco 2008

    Snoothrank:

Fresh and pure on the nose with a very tight core of soil inflected fruit. Its almost slatey smelling. On the palate the fruit is framed by fresh, crisp tannins giving great focus to the lightly briary core that is clear and crisp with good length. 88pts Read More

  • Mascarello Dolcetto Bricco 2008

    Snoothrank:

Woodsy on the nose with notes of candied roses petal and geranium dominate the lean nose. The palate shows decidedly more fruit in the purple, grapy plum and of the spectrum and while this is zesty with cleansing acids it is a bit tough with tough tannins, particularly noticeable on the modest finish. 86pts Read More

  • Hey all. I'm a wine reviewer, and just the other day I launched an article on my site about Dolcetto. The wines I featured were from Santa Barbara County, but I'm a big fan of this grape from New World and Old World producers. Does anyone have any recommendations/stories/opinions about Dolcetto? I'd like to get people talking about it. Cheers.If... Read More

  • Luigi Pira Dolcetto d'Alba 2009

    Snoothrank:

Barrel SampleSpicy on the nose with a lively fruity character, a bit beefy, and spicy with notes of talc, violet and caraway. Great acids on entry balance out the sweetness of very ripe fruit and gently astringent tannins. This is crisp and focused with good energy in the mouth driving the red plum and raspberry fruit across the palate. There ar... Read More
