History of the grape: Counoise is primarily known as one of the 13 varieties allowed in Chateaneuf du Pape. It adds to the aromatics of the final wine. While some are content to let this low-yielding grape disappear, it does have some high-profile fans. Most notably, the Perrin family of Chateau de Beaucastel adds 5% Counoise to its wines. Varietal bottlings are also increasing, and some in California, such as Randal Grahm and Jed Steele, have had success with it.

Characteristics of the grape: dark fruit, spice, pepper, moderate alcohol, good acidity, relatively pale color

Regions where the grape currently is important: the southern Rhone, expecially Chateauneuf du Pape, as well as the Coteaux du Languedoc; California
