Parentage of the grape: Hybrid between Vitis Vinifera and Vitis Labrusca

History of the grape: Concord started out as a chance hybrid between vitis vinifera and vitis labrusca. It was first introduced in 1843 by Ephraim W. Bull and is named after the town of Concord, Massachusetts. Because of its hardiness, it is now the most widely planted vine in the United States. However, its success as an ingredient in table wines has been limited due to its “foxy” flavor, and it is more common in jams, jellies, and grape juices and as a table grape. Indeed, perhaps the second most important event in the grape’s history occurred in 1869, when Dr. Thomas Bramwell Welch pasteurized it to prevent it from fermenting and made Welch’s grape juice. Concord is also made into Kosher wine, which often has a lot of residual sugar.

  • Mt. Hope Estate & Winery Concord 2005

    Snoothrank:

Sweet light dessert wine full of grape flavour absent of any alcohol taste. The effects are still there, so one may need to be careful with its 11% concentration, but the strawberry jam-like preserve should complement just about any fruity or chocolate treat. Still an agreeable delight to imbibe solo, there's no sour, tart or otherwise distrac... Read More

  • Zinfandel for some reason reminds me of porta-potty deodorizer. I think if I never smelled a porta-potty I would like it though! I can always taste Zinfandel in blended Italian table wines and it turns me off, although there are a few brands I like that do have a little Zinf but mainly Merlot. It has a rose or flower scent and taste to it that ju... Another recent Naked Wines selection. If I recall the other vintages of this, ... Loads of sweetish fruit - concord grape, blueberry, and boysenberry and allspice but not much mineral or earth. Only bought one bottle of this one, but suspect leaving it for a year or two would help. All that said, if a more fruit forward young wine is preferred... Read More

Another recent Naked Wines selection. Rather pale, thin, and translucent Brown ... Opens with orange peel and concord grape, then spice and fresh plucked leaves; then some mint and cardamom., licorice and apricot preserves. Most of this carries over to the palate with medium strong Tannins and then a soft long finish of earth and herbs. Quit... Read More
