Chenin Blanc

Common synonyms: Pineau de la Loire, Chenere, Pinot Blanco (South America), Steen (South Africa), Fransdurif (Dutch)

Parentage of the grape: indigenous to the Loire Valley, France, perhaps related to Pineau d’Aunis (Chenin Noir)
History of the grape: Modern day French oenologist Pierre Galet states Chenin Blanc has been in France at least since the 9th century. Its origins are believed to be in Anjou, then it made its way to Tauraine (planted by Lord Chenonceaux, perhaps hence its name), and other parts of the Loire by the 15th century, and then into the Rhone. In the mid 1650s, Jan van Riebeeck of the Dutch East India Company brought vines to the Cape colony of South Africa. It was given the local name “Steen” after a history of mislabeling that plays out like a game of Telephone gone wrong: “Listan” which morphed into “La Stan” and then “De Steen.” Listan is Dutch name for a grape, yes, but the Palomino of Spain. What they in fact had Read more »

Chenin Blanc on Snooth

  • Huët Vouvray Moëlleux le Mont 1997

This has beautifully purity on the nose with beautiful spiced apricot notes, waxy fruits, and grace notes of peach tea and vanilla custard. Deep and perfumed. In the mouth the tremendous acidity keeps this very lively and allows the mineral notes to cut and contrast the honey dipped apricot fruits. Superb balance and quite long this is just a b... • Barton & Guestier Vouvray 2006

Words continue to fail to describe how infinitely drinkable this wine is. Retaining metallic and airy elements without overtly sharp or dry notes, this Vouvray moves equally well at fast and slow paces (i.e.: you can slam this mother down like Blue Ruin, but not, it should be said, because you have to). Currently only tried on its own, but my am... Read More

  • I can't find the ideal match though I haven't strayed from dry whites and reds yet. Correct me if I'm wrong but aged brie has a bit of that moldiness that almost reminds me of TCA. Who wants a wine that complements TCA? If wine did go with TCA then cork taint wouldn't be a fault! Anyway maybe I should venture into the sweeter realm since bluevei... Read More

  • Paumanok Chenin Blanc 2007

Pink grapefruit dominates. A very simple, clean and pure wine. Clearly a great pair with oysters or any seafood. Very racy, crisp, with a long mineral finish.(I also tasted the still fermenting 2008 Chenin while i was at the winery - very nice, still has that pink grapefruit character and promises to be good). • Paumanok Chenin Blanc 2007

The nose is complex and expressive, showing a fruit salad mélange of grapefruit, mango, pear, melon and orange blossom.A medium-bodied palate starts off fresh and clean with melon, grapefruit and mineral flavors, but as the wine crosses over into the mid-palate, the flavors change a bit, becoming richer with pineapple and honey overtones. That h... Read More

Tasted at the winery (along with a delicious fermenting tank sample). Wine shows citrus and tropical fruit flavors with a nice funk on the finish. Crisp and refreshing acidity. Read More
