Chenin Blanc

Common synonyms: Pineau de la Loire, Chenere, Pinot Blanco (South America), Steen (South Africa), Fransdurif (Dutch)

Parentage of the grape: indigenous to the Loire Valley, France, perhaps related to Pineau d’Aunis (Chenin Noir)
History of the grape: Modern day French oenologist Pierre Galet states Chenin Blanc has been in France at least since the 9th century. Its origins are believed to be in Anjou, then it made its way to Tauraine (planted by Lord Chenonceaux, perhaps hence its name), and other parts of the Loire by the 15th century, and then into the Rhone. In the mid 1650s, Jan van Riebeeck of the Dutch East India Company brought vines to the Cape colony of South Africa. It was given the local name “Steen” after a history of mislabeling that plays out like a game of Telephone gone wrong: “Listan” which morphed into “La Stan” and then “De Steen.” Listan is Dutch name for a grape, yes, but the Palomino of Spain. • Ste. Chapelle Soft Chenin Blanc American Winemaker 2006

This is a soft white. A good wine for a crowd. More complex than Pinot Grigio, not as distinct as a Reisling. Nice deck wineIn the reds I like a good Cahors (SW France), Merlot (or Bordeaux) , Malbec or Gamay wine. Read More

  • Dry Creek Vineyard Chenin Blanc Clarksburg Dry Chenin Blanc 2004

This was tasted at the Snooth Panel Blind Tasting. It was the last wine in the tasting and by this point I wasn't picking up much so I'd need to taste this again to be sure. It had an aroma of tea and cedar. It had a jammy flavor with some spicy but was a bit unbalanced with no finish. Read More

This is one of my absolute favorite , and go-to, white wines. The nose is light and grapefruitey. The taste is citrus fruit all around. My previous go-to, crowd pleasing White was Conundrum, but this wine has taken the top rank. It is somewhat more complex and satisfying than Conundrum, while being just as refreshing and satisfying. Furthe... Read More

I ordered this wine not knowing what to expect from an Argentina Chenin Blanc. I was VERY pleseantly surprised. Fresh and fruity, (but not over the top) the wine had several layers of flavors that I was able to peel through before the clean finish. I paid $24 for a bottle at a restaurant in Seattle, so I imagine it can be found for half that at ... Read More
