Chenin Blanc

Common synonyms: Pineau de la Loire, Chenere, Pinot Blanco (South America), Steen (South Africa), Fransdurif (Dutch)

Parentage of the grape: indigenous to the Loire Valley, France, perhaps related to Pineau d’Aunis (Chenin Noir)
History of the grape: Modern day French oenologist Pierre Galet states Chenin Blanc has been in France at least since the 9th century. Its origins are believed to be in Anjou, then it made its way to Tauraine (planted by Lord Chenonceaux, perhaps hence its name), and other parts of the Loire by the 15th century, and then into the Rhone. In the mid 1650s, Jan van Riebeeck of the Dutch East India Company brought vines to the Cape colony of South Africa. It was given the local name “Steen” after a history of mislabeling that plays out like a game of Telephone gone wrong: “Listan” which morphed into “La Stan” and then “De Steen.” Listan is Dutch name for a grape, yes, but the Palomino of Spain. What they in fact had Read more »

  • Pine Ridge Chenin Blanc Viognier 2007

I picked up a bottle of this at a local wine tasting where we were tasting blends. I wasn't exceptionally impressed at the tasting because, I suspect, I was so impressed with the Evolution. However, I finally got around to trying the bottle I bought with a light lunch salad and found it really nice. It is a little on the sweet side but not cloyi... Read More

  • Huët Vouvray Moëlleux le Mont 1997

This has beautifully purity on the nose with beautiful spiced apricot notes, waxy fruits, and grace notes of peach tea and vanilla custard. Deep and perfumed. In the mouth the tremendous acidity keeps this very lively and allows the mineral notes to cut and contrast the honey dipped apricot fruits. Superb balance and quite long this is just a b... • Barton & Guestier Vouvray 2006

Words continue to fail to describe how infinitely drinkable this wine is. Retaining metallic and airy elements without overtly sharp or dry notes, this Vouvray moves equally well at fast and slow paces (i.e.: you can slam this mother down like Blue Ruin, but not, it should be said, because you have to). Currently only tried on its own, but my am... Read More
