Chenin Blanc

Common synonyms: Pineau de la Loire, Chenere, Pinot Blanco (South America), Steen (South Africa), Fransdurif (Dutch)

Parentage of the grape: indigenous to the Loire Valley, France, perhaps related to Pineau d’Aunis (Chenin Noir)
History of the grape: Modern day French oenologist Pierre Galet states Chenin Blanc has been in France at least since the 9th century. Its origins are believed to be in Anjou, then it made its way to Tauraine (planted by Lord Chenonceaux, perhaps hence its name), and other parts of the Loire by the 15th century, and then into the Rhone. In the mid 1650s, Jan van Riebeeck of the Dutch East India Company brought vines to the Cape colony of South Africa. It was given the local name “Steen” after a history of mislabeling that plays out like a game of Telephone gone wrong: “Listan” which morphed into “La Stan” and then “De Steen.” Listan is Dutch name for a grape, yes, but the Palomino of Spain. Floral peach nose. Good acidity and tropical fruits, almost prickly crisp, but sweet peachy fruit balances the wine - excellent on a warm summers day. Good wine for $10 Read More

  • Domaine des Forges Chaume Premier Cru des Coteaux du Layon 2007

A serious yet beautiful, fun wine. Again, Chaume wines are the result of ... a ... a soul-mate microclimate for Chenin blanc and 2) a no-expenses-spared spa treatment for the variety; thanks in particular, to Forges' aptitude for handling it adequately.Luscious sweet fruit balanced with orange peel, soft vanilla pod and a seemingly electric bol... • Big House White 2006

Serviceable. In my opinion too many varietals making it too complex and not ... ... fruit. Probably high in Chenin Blanc. Also: Sauv Blanc, viognier, malvasia bianca, orange muscat muscat canelli, and marsann Read More

  • Dry Creek Vineyard Chenin Blanc Clarksburg Dry Chenin Blanc 2005

Not impressed. I keep putting the glass down instead of keeping my nose stuck in it as I tend to do with wines I like. It's not bad, just a bit bland. The nose is pleasant with some sweet spice notes, but the palate is flat. Good tannins though. Read More

  • Tmv White 2005

Second in a flight of SA wines we tried after the Sequillo white, and if anything even headier: this is also in the style of a southern-French white, but gonzoid and turbo-charged. It could conceivably be drunk with a fruity dessert, such is its seductive richness; but it charmed our monkfish just as well, permeating the meal with its resinous, ... Read More

  • Sequillo 2006

We had this on a recent trip to a hotel near us in Scotland run by a South African chef, who keeps one of the largest SA-only cellars outside his mother country. I've always been a bit underwhelmed by South African wines -- partly owing to lack of knowledge, I have to admit. This, though, was an extraordinary, huge, blockbuster wine in the style ... Read More

  • Carvalho Family Wines Chenin Blanc Clarksburg Late Harvest 2005

A lovely white dessert wine from a small winery a very short drive south of Sacramento, California. For an instant it tastes like a very light wine, and then the tropical sweetness and a heavy honeyed mouthfeel explodes on your tongue. Not as thick and cloying as some other sweet whites. Great with a tropical or citrus dessert, something a li... Read More

I'm a red wine drinker always in search of an interesting white. To my uneducated palate, the wine started off (too?) sweet, but only for half a second. I found it drinkable. Read More
