Chenin Blanc

Common synonyms: Pineau de la Loire, Chenere, Pinot Blanco (South America), Steen (South Africa), Fransdurif (Dutch)

Parentage of the grape: indigenous to the Loire Valley, France, perhaps related to Pineau d’Aunis (Chenin Noir)
History of the grape: Modern day French oenologist Pierre Galet states Chenin Blanc has been in France at least since the 9th century. Its origins are believed to be in Anjou, then it made its way to Tauraine (planted by Lord Chenonceaux, perhaps hence its name), and other parts of the Loire by the 15th century, and then into the Rhone. In the mid 1650s, Jan van Riebeeck of the Dutch East India Company brought vines to the Cape colony of South Africa. It was given the local name “Steen” after a history of mislabeling that plays out like a game of Telephone gone wrong: “Listan” which morphed into “La Stan” and then “De Steen.” Listan is Dutch name for a grape, yes, but the Palomino of Spain. Chenin Blanc on Snooth

  • Thought I should introduce myself properly.. I'm new to snooth, found it almost by accident this afternoon; however, I have heard about it before.A little about myself: I've enjoyed wine as a meal accompaniment for years, since my early teens, which I guess comes from my parents. As long as I can remember, a bottle of red has always graced the... Read More

  • Kleine Zalze Bush Vines Chenin Blanc Stellenbosch Rsa 2008

A lively fresh, full, mouthful. Dry - a little spritz noticable - and plenty of apple and pear flavours. Good texture, combining as expected, ripe New World fruit with a textural feel. I love the gravelly, tropical-fruit- tinged finish - guava, mango et al. For the price, excellent and now the 'house wine' with a couple of bottles stashed away i... Read More

  • In 1998 my mom and I went to Chateaux de Chenonceau and visited the wine cellar. That is where I tasted and purchased their white wine. Brought it home and haven't been able to find it again. That has been my mission since then. When I find it again I am going to buy a case at a time for the house because it has been my favorite and I haven't bee... Read More

  • Morgenhof Estate Chenin Blanc Simonsberg-Stellenbosch 2007

This wine has it all: Vanilla, cream, milky nose, white chocolate, coconut. A real bomb... But euh, where is the chenin-blanc?A great and impressive start, but you get bored after a while from all its power. Great however to have a white wine that can cope with the heavier creamy chicken or fish recepies. Read More

  • The world of Kosher wines is no longer limited to Manischewitz. There is a great array out there coming from every wine producing region in the world. Though Israel stands in the vanguard of just the sheer number of bottles of kosher wine coming for one place, France has a very nice selection, as well as Australia, California, and even some sout... • Domaine des Baumard Clos du Papillon Savennieres 2005

Shows very typical characteristics of chenin blanc - some vegetal notes, green apples and wet wool. I would wait for this one to develop flavors of honey and toast,, well I'm not a big fan of dry chenin blanc while its still young. Read More
