Chenin Blanc

Common synonyms: Pineau de la Loire, Chenere, Pinot Blanco (South America), Steen (South Africa), Fransdurif (Dutch)

Parentage of the grape: indigenous to the Loire Valley, France, perhaps related to Pineau d’Aunis (Chenin Noir)
History of the grape: Modern day French oenologist Pierre Galet states Chenin Blanc has been in France at least since the 9th century. It was given the local name “Steen” after a history of mislabeling that plays out like a game of Telephone gone wrong: “Listan” which morphed into “La Stan” and then “De Steen.” Listan is Dutch name for a grape, yes, but the Palomino of Spain. A great bargain ($8-$9 in the D.C./Baltimore area) and very drinkable Chenin Blanc from South Africa's Stellenbosch region. The wine displays a pale white color and light body with citrus, limes and minerals on the nose. In the mouth the chalky minerality balances with moderate acidity for a soft feel, yet still up to fish on the grill, summer pa... Read More

  • Pine Ridge Chenin Blanc-Viognier Clarksburg 2003

In many ways, this wine is typically American...some of the flavor notes are a bit too big for this wine to pair well with food. That being said, it was delicious, crisp, and super-quaffable, which makes it a good wine for me. Read More
