Chenin Blanc

Common synonyms: Pineau de la Loire, Chenere, Pinot Blanco (South America), Steen (South Africa), Fransdurif (Dutch)

Parentage of the grape: indigenous to the Loire Valley, France, perhaps related to Pineau d’Aunis (Chenin Noir)

History of the grape: Modern day French oenologist Pierre Galet states Chenin Blanc has been in France at least since the 9th century. Its origins are believed to be in Anjou, then it made its way to Tauraine (planted by Lord Chenonceaux, perhaps hence its name), and other parts of the Loire by the 15th century, and then into the Rhone. In the mid 1650s, Jan van Riebeeck of the Dutch East India Company brought vines to the Cape colony of South Africa. It was given the local name “Steen” after a history of mislabeling that plays out like a game of Telephone gone wrong: “Listan” which morphed into “La Stan” and then “De Steen.” Listan is Dutch name for a grape, yes, but the Palomino of Spain. Chenin Blanc on Snooth

  • Anjou Blanc Mosse 2007

    Snoothrank:

Nice pale gold color with anise and honey on the nose, Meyer lemon (almost tangerine) citrus on the palate with honey and ripe pear, almost nutty on the finish. Showed that nice crisp Chenin acidity. If you like white Burgundy, this is a good approximation for much less. Read More

  • Sadie Family Sequillo White 2007

    Snoothrank:

A magical blend of principally Chenin Blanc with Marsanne, Roussanne and a touch of Viognier. Creamy edged, full, textural, weighty reminiscent of a Pinot Gris but with more of a crisp finish. Very food friendly.http://www.spittoon.biz/the_wine_society_-_brief_notes.html Read More

  • Need a little help on this matter. My wine guy suggested many wines to me most out of tanks, like it was better than sitting in oak. Can someone explain the main differences. My take so far is that American oak gives a Vanilla flavor to the wine(is this right or wrong)? And why do the French think their oak is better? Thanks Read More
