Chenin Blanc

Common synonyms: Pineau de la Loire, Chenere, Pinot Blanco (South America), Steen (South Africa), Fransdurif (Dutch)

Parentage of the grape: indigenous to the Loire Valley, France, perhaps related to Pineau d’Aunis (Chenin Noir)
History of the grape: Modern day French oenologist Pierre Galet states Chenin Blanc has been in France at least since the 9th century. Its origins are believed to be in Anjou, then it made its way to Tauraine (planted by Lord Chenonceaux, perhaps hence its name), and other parts of the Loire by the 15th century, and then into the Rhone. It was given the local name “Steen” after a history of mislabeling that plays out like a game of Telephone gone wrong: “Listan” which morphed into “La Stan” and then “De Steen.” Listan is Dutch name for a grape, yes, but the Palomino of Spain. • I'm with GregT that any sweet wine needs to have some zip.  Botrytis ... ... good acid, like furmint, chenin blanc, and the like.  I like grenache, although I usually like higher acids, albeit in my whites a bit more than my reds; grenache just isn't one of those high acid grapes, so I don't know if I would ever jump on it as a dessert wine.  ... • Wild Meadows Red Beauty 2011

Lightly herbal red fruit aromas of raspberry and strawberry. Jammy licorice and ripe black cherry flavors in the mouth, this has a fair bit of cinnamon spice and vanilla as well as blueberry fruit syrup, soft violet and milk chocolate notes towards the finish, which is medium-short but leaves some tannins behind. • On and off with differing frequency mention is made on these boards of garnacha as a choice for certain palates, and in certain contexts. Most of the mention here is pretty generic, and doesn't get down to any level of detail.Would like to suggest we take up the subject of wines from this grape with better focus. Where is good, who makes the goo... Read More

  • Hey EMark, your Spätlese Riesling is a "Late Harvest" that is ... wine. More like a Demi Sec Chenin Blanc. The elevated sugar level allows them to age nicely. The German wines go in this order Kabinett  - dry to semi-sweeet, reserve wineSpätlese - late harvest, 1 week later than normal, semi-sweetAuslese - select harvest, very ripe, sometimes ...
