Chenin Blanc

Common synonyms: Pineau de la Loire, Chenere, Pinot Blanco (South America), Steen (South Africa), Fransdurif (Dutch)

Parentage of the grape: indigenous to the Loire Valley, France, perhaps related to Pineau d’Aunis (Chenin Noir)
History of the grape: Modern day French oenologist Pierre Galet states Chenin Blanc has been in France at least since the 9th century. Its origins are believed to be in Anjou, then it made its way to Tauraine (planted by Lord Chenonceaux, perhaps hence its name), and other parts of the Loire by the 15th century, and then into the Rhone. In the mid 1650s, Jan van Riebeeck of the Dutch East India Company brought vines to the Cape colony of South Africa. It was given the local name “Steen” after a history of mislabeling that plays out like a game of Telephone gone wrong: “Listan” which morphed into “La Stan” and then “De Steen.” Listan is Dutch name for a grape, yes, but the Palomino of Spain. • Badger Mountain Pure White Vns

Badgers mountains pure white wine leaves little to be desired. The initial complex fruity notes can only succumbed by the finishing notes of salted chode. It's starts with a medium body and hints of pineapple. Only to finish across the tongue with distinct anus characteristics. The final impression is that of a overweight man's towel after the ... • The expected price ranges quoted are for the lot-quantity of bottles mentioned, ... some ways reminds us of dry Chenin Blanc. The wine is clean and brisk and refreshing, medium-bodied, and the aromatics follow-through on the palate. This seems like a good compliment to the other local wines! Maybe order the Chenin Blanc off the list (lots of good CB from down South Africa way), and then have the staff open the red I brought.I see no advantage in supporting Morton wine price gouging. Chee Read More

  • DM - We did have a 1/2 dozen oysters to start with, and the Chenin Blanc might have paired well with that, but we would have needed a second bottle to go with the steak dinners.  Our male friend (Greg) was drinking what ever we put in front of him, but his wife (Beth) only wanted a few small servings of wine since she was on medication.  Overall... • Al, I would've started with a bottle of the South African chenin blanc, then followed with a bottle of the Mayacamas from near the bottom of your top photograph (hard to read all the way to the top of it or the one at bottom). Two bottles for $200. Would decant the Mayacamas. The wine list is too pricey for what's there, and it's all the usual st... Read More

  • This summer I'm trying to help you out of your seasonal drinking ruts. So far I've suggest some delicious alternatives to your standard drinking fare. Consider Portuguese whites, Soave, and of course Chenin from South Africa as tips worthy of investigation.Today I turn my attention to Spain, and in particular towards Rueda and it's mainstay vari...
