Chenin Blanc

Common synonyms: Pineau de la Loire, Chenere, Pinot Blanco (South America), Steen (South Africa), Fransdurif (Dutch)

Parentage of the grape: indigenous to the Loire Valley, France, perhaps related to Pineau d’Aunis (Chenin Noir)

History of the grape: Modern day French oenologist Pierre Galet states Chenin Blanc has been in France at least since the 9th century. Its origins are believed to be in Anjou, then it made its way to Tauraine (planted by Lord Chenonceaux, perhaps hence its name), and other parts of the Loire by the 15th century, and then into the Rhone. In the mid 1650s, Jan van Riebeeck of the Dutch East India Company brought vines to the Cape colony of South Africa. It was given the local name “Steen” after a history of mislabeling that plays out like a game of Telephone gone wrong: “Listan” which morphed into “La Stan” and then “De Steen.” Listan is Dutch name for a grape, yes, but the Palomino of Spain. Chenin Blanc on Snooth

  • Last night it was Vouvray - although a slightly upscale - though popular - ... ... - ... I am not a fan of Chenin Blanc generally, but it is an everyday wine for many - especially those examples (which can be very good if very dry) from South Africa (known traditionally as Steen).  California jug wine generally has its share of this grape as ... • Don't be shy now... I don't always drink classified growths, the best boutique wines of California, Washington or Oregon or even fine Champagne every night.  Price is part of the equation, I suppose, but "rightness" or "fit" seems more apropos.  A modest Riesling, a Viognier from Provence, or a good quality (but modestly priced) A. C. Bordeaux w... Read More

  • I find that the presence or absence of sunshine affects my choice of wine.  Sunny days encourage me to select a soft white; a colder, blustery day has me reaching for a hearty red.  Anyone else suffer from weather-affected wine-drinking disorders? Read More

  • Champalou Vouvray 2015

    Snoothrank:

This is a classic Chenin Blanc from Touraine (Vouvray) - a wine grape famous since at least the year 1500. It is not bone dry, but in a dry style - still Classique - with apple, lime and dates on the nose; entry is citric, with a touch of rosewater, hence great style and elegance. As fine as it gets for the price. Age-worthy.89. Read More

Golden in the glass with a floral nose that followed into the palate. Medium weight and finishes nicely. There are other bottling I prefer but this does nicely in a pinch. Read More
