Catawba

Even older than the Concord grape, this historically-important variety is thought to be a chance seedling from North Carolina, originating in that state’s Piedmont region and named after the nearby Catawba River. A hybrid of labrusca and another native species, it is commonly grown in the eastern United States and in Canada.

Catawba is often used to produce sweet wine and ultra-sweet ice wine, in addition to red and rosé table wines. The grape's high acid profile also makes it suitable as a base for sparkling wine production. Catawba based wines are distinguished by a so-called 'foxy' aroma, although modern winemaking sometimes manages to moderate this tendency. Catawba grapes may fail to ripen properly, unless grown in areas with a long growing season. The varietal also has some susceptibility to fungal diseases.

Very nice wine. Lots of dark fruit, blackberries and plums, but not a fruit forward wine. A wonderful and evolving spice. Medium plus finish with exquisite mouthfeel. Read More

  • Alpha Omega II Red Blend 2009

    Snoothrank:

Wonderful wine. Full structure and front and mid palate loaded! The entry and mid palate are big, ripe, and full structured. The tannins are fine and the nose is fantastic! Mocha notes entice the senses in this great accessible blend from a fantastic winery in Alpha Omega. My only criticism is in the lack of the end palate. The finish dissip... Read More

  • Alpha Omega Era 2011

    Snoothrank:

If you get only one 2011 cabernet vintage, get this one. It was THE SURPRISE of my time in Napa Valley (Nov, 2013). I was blown away by it's richness and vibrancy -- and at such a young age! I can't imagine what aging will do for this wine. As only 900 or so cases made, I urge you to get this wine. 100 points. Read More

  • Alpha Omega Era 2011

    Snoothrank:

100% cab. Dark, brooding and powerful, but with finesse. Hints of mint with currant, cassis on the nose. Great structure and balance for such a powerful and young wine. Really remarkable. It's elegant and possessed with a noble red wine character and simply put, contains all the great things cab is, in perfect harmony. Delicious and age wo... Read More
