Common synonyms: Carinena, Carignano, Mazuelo

Parentage of the grape: indigenous to Aragon, Spain
History of the grape: The grape has been traced as far back as the 3rd century in the Aragon province in Spain. The Aragon region of Carinena was originally named for the once-prolific regional grape, though Garnacha (or Grenache) has since gained precedence. As Mazuelo, it is one of the main blending grapes of Rioja and as Carinena in Priorat blends. From Spain it made its way to Algeria and was introduced into the Languedoc region of France some time in the 12th century. It's also mainly a blending grape there, most often with Cinsault, Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. In the 20th century, it found its way to places like Chile, the US and Israel, where growing conditions allow for more single varietal releases with concentrated flavors.
Characteristics of the grape: deep, dark, rich, strong tannins, mineral, blueberry, blackberry, boysenberry Read more »

Carignan on Snooth

  • I know there are a lot of educated wine drinkers on this website but I also think that there are many novices like myself on here trying to learn. There is soooo much good information on Snooth but much of it is too advanced for me, and others I'm sure. Basically, I am looking for an advanced wine drinker to give us some of the key essential fac... Read More

  • Rene Junot Red Table Wine

This, in the double bottle, is an excellent value for a French red table wine, less than $10 for the 1.5l at our local Safeway. A good choice for entertaining a really large group. Read More

  • Old World Winery Syrah Blend North Coast Field Blend Two Vineyards 2006

Blended from two excellent vineyards (Lone Redwood Ranch in the Russian River AVA and Rockin' R Ranch in Mendocino), this delicious wine is tighter and more Rhone-structured than the fruitbomb '05 Field Blend Block that was made entirely from the Lone Redwood Ranch and was not so Syrah-dominated. The 2006 Field Blend has a lovely nose redolent o... Read More

  • Hecht & Bannier Côtes du Roussillon Villages 2005

From its appearance in the glass to its silky finish, this wine exudes ... 35% ... ... 35% Syrah and the rest Carignan and Mourvedre, barrel-aged for more than 24 months. The label comments on its "plenitude and onctuousity [sic]." (I think they meant unctuousness.) It has a lot of slender "legs" sliding down from a sheet of glycerine but ... Read More

  • Becker Vineyards Red Rhone Blend Texas High Plains Prairie Rotie Martin Vineyard 2007

Normally I am a big proponent of Becker Vineyards and their wines, however, this wine was a little bit disappointing to me. I am a huge fan of Rhone wines and I had been looking for a chance to try this particular wine from Becker. In this wine I got some dark fruit notes, but it was somewhat hard to distinguish them from anything else due to ... Read More

This is a great find at BevMo for $15 bucks for a 2003 vintage, retail value is ... price. I love this blend of carignan with 20% GSM. Great mouthful of juicy plum and cherry, soft tannin. Probably won't get better with more aging. Drink no Read More
