Carignan

Common synonyms: Carinena, Carignano, Mazuelo

Parentage of the grape: indigenous to Aragon, Spain

History of the grape: The grape has been traced as far back as the 3rd century in the Aragon province in Spain. The Aragon region of Carinena was originally named for the once-prolific regional grape, though Garnacha (or Grenache) has since gained precedence. As Mazuelo, it is one of the main blending grapes of Rioja and as Carinena in Priorat blends. From Spain it made its way to Algeria and was introduced into the Languedoc region of France some time in the 12th century. It's also mainly a blending grape there, most often with Cinsault, Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. In the 20th century, it found its way to places like Chile, the US and Israel, where growing conditions allow for more single varietal releases with concentrated flavors.

Carignan on Snooth

  • Sonoma County 2007

    Snoothrank:

Sweet blueberry licorice nose, you can tell this is a rich and fruity wine. Doesn't disappoint with opulent fruit (cherry, plums, blackberries) and a core of vanilla bean. White pepper and rich sweet fruit through to the finish, with good acidity for a fruity zin. Spicy aftertaste. Nice. Read More

  • Forchini Vineyards 'Old Vine' Dry Creek Valley 2007

    Snoothrank:

Deep, earthy, brownie, a touch malty with dusty earth and rosebush accents to the liquory, orange oil accented raspberry fruit. Theres even a small floral element at play here. Seamless, a touch soft perhaps but this really has a bit of elegance in the mouth with those same orange oil and floral nuances contributing some depth to the black ras... Read More

  • Forchini Vineyards 'Old Vine' Dry Creek Valley 2007

    Snoothrank:

This smells dark, rich and spicy with a smoky, briary top note over the slightly gamy boysenberry fruit. Bright and chewy in the mouth with a slinky, silky feel. Lovely balance and texture to this wine with an earthy core of boysenberry and wild blackberry fruit that leads to a spicy, earthy, slightly licorice tinged finish that features a retu... Read More

  • Sonoma County 2007

    Snoothrank:

Crisp brambly fruit on the nose, there is a really nice crisp bay leaf, menthol, and vegetal edge on the nose that is attractive and adds depth to the melon rind, cherry and gingerbread spiced cranberry fruit. Lovely in the mouth, bright wild berry fruits are nicely red and have that slight vegetal/floral edge adding complexity and snap to the ... Read More

  • Posted on behalf of a user. c9dp isnt my specialist area, so thought I'd turn it over to the wiser and larger crowd:ThanksPJ~~~~~~Do you have any recommendations for a Chateauneuf-du-pape? We love fully structured, complex wines. This one sounds up my alley, but also one that most would probably feel strongly about...positively or negatively. I ... Read More
