Carignan

Common synonyms: Carinena, Carignano, Mazuelo

Parentage of the grape: indigenous to Aragon, Spain

History of the grape: The grape has been traced as far back as the 3rd century in the Aragon province in Spain. The Aragon region of Carinena was originally named for the once-prolific regional grape, though Garnacha (or Grenache) has since gained precedence. As Mazuelo, it is one of the main blending grapes of Rioja and as Carinena in Priorat blends. From Spain it made its way to Algeria and was introduced into the Languedoc region of France some time in the 12th century. It's also mainly a blending grape there, most often with Cinsault, Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. In the 20th century, it found its way to places like Chile, the US and Israel, where growing conditions allow for more single varietal releases with concentrated flavors.

Characteristics of the grape: deep, dark, rich, strong tannins, mineral, blueberry, blackberry, boysenberry Read more »

Carignan on Snooth

  • Saint Jean de Barroux l'Oligocene 2005

    Snoothrank:

Needed 1.5 hours decant time (40 min decanter, then back into the bottle for an hour). Paired very well with a Herbs-de-Provence chicken pasta (basil, onion, garlic, thyme, olive oil) and not bad with special Indian dishes (Madras lentils featuring ginger). Wine has strong nose similar in aroma to a port or amaretto and in the mouth spices of ... Read More

  • Saint Jean de Barroux l'Oligocene 2005

    Snoothrank:

This wine might pair quite well with savory, subtle, and spicy Indian cooking e.g. other than bold curries. Wine has strong nose similar in aroma to a port or amaretto and in the mouth spices of cumin, anise, and a bit of cinnamon that seem to surf forward on smooth, drying tannins and dry smooth fruit. One person remarked the wine had a ginger... Read More

  • Domaine Pouderoux Grenache Blend Maury Latour de Gres 2005

    Snoothrank:

Nose Sweet, spicy (rather scrubland). Pleasant, well rounded by the barrel. In the mouth, sliding very well. The freshness and fruit almost blackcurrant. Silky. Can still keep several years.Already good to go, no astringency of tannins or aggressive. From body to announce an interesting aging. Read More

  • Domaine de la Petite Cassagne Red Rhone Blend Costières-de-Nîmes 2007

    Snoothrank:

Another aromatic and delicious bargain from the South of France (Nimes). Similar to the 2006 vintage of same wine, but more tame and disciplined, with an inviting nose of baked brown sugar, floral, and thyme or bay leaf; somewhat pungent on opening but smooths out with decanting. On the attack lively acid, fuzzy tannin, and dry red tart-sweet... Read More
