Carignan

Common synonyms: Carinena, Carignano, Mazuelo

Parentage of the grape: indigenous to Aragon, Spain

History of the grape: The grape has been traced as far back as the 3rd century in the Aragon province in Spain. The Aragon region of Carinena was originally named for the once-prolific regional grape, though Garnacha (or Grenache) has since gained precedence. As Mazuelo, it is one of the main blending grapes of Rioja and as Carinena in Priorat blends. From Spain it made its way to Algeria and was introduced into the Languedoc region of France some time in the 12th century. It's also mainly a blending grape there, most often with Cinsault, Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. In the 20th century, it found its way to places like Chile, the US and Israel, where growing conditions allow for more single varietal releases with concentrated flavors.

Characteristics of the grape: deep, dark, rich, strong tannins, mineral, blueberry, blackberry, boysenberry Read more »

Carignan on Snooth

  • Carignan AKA Mazuelo, Bovale Grande, Cariñena and Carignane, is, for most wine lovers, a bit of an enigma. We know it’s out there, component in many blends, particularly from Spain and France, where it was the most widely planted variety in the country through much of the 1980s. But what do we really know of Carignane? Not so much because there ... Read More

  • Bedrock Wine Company Carignane 2012

    Snoothrank:

From vines planted in 1888 My 3/8, the groups 2/8 At first this was somewhat tight on the nose with hints of creamy French oak and some coconut nuance but air brought out fruity and bright spicy nuanced wild black cherry and boysenberry fruit. Round and complete in the mouth, this is a bit creamy and almost lush in this company with juicy wild ... Read More

  • Meli Carignane Maule Valley Chile 2012

    Snoothrank:

90% Carignane, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon My 7/8, the groups 1/8 Deep and focused on the nose with an earthy core, smoky nuance, and wild plum and wild cherry aromas. On the palate this comes off as a bit tannic and extracted, leading to a mid-palate thats a bit hollow. Darkly fruited and inelegant, this finishes with bitterness and vanilla, and wo... Read More

    Snoothrank:

My 1/8, the groups 5/8 Jammy and fruity on the nose with attractive gingerbread oak tones working well with violet, cocoa, and chocolate-laced wild berry fruit aromas. • Meli Carignan Dueno de la Luna 2009

    Snoothrank:

My 6/8, the groups 7/8 A bit raw and woody on the nose though with attractive violet nuances over a base of chocolate, herb and green nutty notes. Seamless on entry, with fine grained ripe tannins and nuanced tobacco, spicy plum, and oak flavors. This turns inky, bitter, and over-extracted on the backend and very clunky and chunky on the modest... Read More

    Snoothrank:

My 5/8, the groups 6/8 A touch herbal and slightly oaky on the nose with spicy black cherry fruit and hints of candied herb aromas. Bright, lean and a bit simple in the mouth. Carbonic maceration, organic farming, native yeasts. Spicy on the nose and high-toned if graced with nuanced meaty, smoky, black olive and leathery aromas. Bright on entry and quite acid driven in the mouth, this is packed with juicy red fruit, all cranberry and wild cherry. Theres a nice touch of minerality to the palate and a hint of pomegra... Old vine Carignan, certified Organic by Ecocert AB, blended with 20% Certified Demeter Biodynamic Grenache. A touch stinky on the nose with natural aromas of barnyard and dry grasses. • Ridge Vineyards 'Three Valley' Three Valleys Zinfandel 2010

    Snoothrank:

Deep purple colour. Intense nose with notes of blackberry and burnt caramel/caedarwood. More of the same on the palate. My other half thought the tannin was just a little rough. Medium long length. Expected a little more from this wine given it's price up here in Canada. Read More
