Carignan

Common synonyms: Carinena, Carignano, Mazuelo

Parentage of the grape: indigenous to Aragon, Spain

History of the grape: The grape has been traced as far back as the 3rd century in the Aragon province in Spain. The Aragon region of Carinena was originally named for the once-prolific regional grape, though Garnacha (or Grenache) has since gained precedence. As Mazuelo, it is one of the main blending grapes of Rioja and as Carinena in Priorat blends. From Spain it made its way to Algeria and was introduced into the Languedoc region of France some time in the 12th century. It's also mainly a blending grape there, most often with Cinsault, Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. In the 20th century, it found its way to places like Chile, the US and Israel, where growing conditions allow for more single varietal releases with concentrated flavors.

Characteristics of the grape: deep, dark, rich, strong tannins, mineral, blueberry, blackberry, boysenberry Read more »

I bought this bottle of wine for £12 from a shop in Wiltshire [www.yapp.co.uk ... rest a mix of bourboulenc, carignan, clairette, grenache blanc, mourverde, syrah and piquepoul. I started my bottle last night with my supper of tuna salad and I did enjoy it. It is not too dry and there is a lot of a cherry and strawberry style fruit there. I wo... Read More

  • Who needs CA? Just too hard to source over here, and waaaay too pricey. ... ... Syrah, Mourvèdre and Carignan and is apparently declassified La Clape. I found it remarkably concentrated and arresting though still pretty firm. I'd ideally keep it until the end of this year or even next - or serve it with chewy food or freshly ground black peppe... • Hey everyone, what are some of your favorite 'everyday' or M-F types of wines to accompany a regular dinner?  I personally have enjoyed the Montoya Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa, and I usually pick it up from Total Wines out here in Virginia.  This is one of those fruit-forward cabs that isn't too complex for me to appreciate, and it usually cost... Very floral and gamy on the nose with an intriguing hint of hazelnuts adding detail along with deep ink, briar and dried herb aromas. There's great freshness to the palate here showing nuanced sweetness up front along with flavors of blueberries, and complex mineral, earth, and cocoa notes. The finish start out quite vibrant and high toned, but ... Read More

  • Pretty impressive, OT.  On initial look, one might think that the ... night, I opened up a 2012 Carignan from a maker called Broc Cellars.  (I,d never heard of them.  What's new.)  Much fruitier than any Carignan I've ever had.  I like them to be more earthy.  So, this one was not my favorit Read More
